Palin Leaves Entitlement Reform Position Unclear

By Anne E. Kornblut
WASILLA, Alaska -- Gov. Sarah Palin brushed aside a question about entitlement reform during her interview with ABC on Friday, saying she would simply "find efficiencies" in the Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid programs rather than assess their fundamental health.

Palin seemed to struggle some with the question, which came after she said that one of the top economic priorities of a McCain-Palin administration would be to reduce the federal budget. Palin said that in doing so, she would leave veterans' benefits off the table.

ABC anchor Charles Gibson asked where the cuts would come from, then. "Do you talk about entitlement reform? Is there money you can save in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid?"

"I am sure that there are efficiencies that are going to be found in all of those agencies. I am confident in that," Palin said.

Gibson followed up by explaining that "the agencies are not involved in entitlements. Basically, discretionary spending is at 18 percent of the budget."

Palin came back to her original point. "We have certainly seen excess in agencies, though, and in -- when bureaucrats, when bureaucracy just gets kind of comfortable, going with the status-quo and not being challenged to find efficiencies and spend other people's money wisely, then that's where we get into the situation that we are into today, and that is a tremendous growth of government, a huge debt, trillions of dollars of debt that we're passing on to my kids and your kids and your grandkids," Palin said. "It's unacceptable."

So, if any of you have friends that are voting for McCain because of Palin, I asked a buddy of mine a question he couldn't counter. I don't know if it swayed him much, but it gave him pause:

Palin couldn't run a city of 9000 without driving it millions of dollars into the hole, she couldn't run a state of 670,00 (which is, by the way, smaller than the population of Chicago) without accusations of corruptions and an investigation, what makes you possibly believe she could run a country of three hundred million people with anything like competency?

Aside from the substance, the ad itself is extremely disgusting. "Obama wants to teach sex ed to kindergartners" while you have a picture of Obama smiling, looking over his shoulder.

Yeah, if for any reason you were under the mistaken impression that John McCain had a shred of honor or dignity left in him, watch that ad a few times, remember he's complaining about Obama protecting children against fucking child-rapists, and listen to "I'm John McCain and I approve this message" a few times.

Accusations and corruption charges are old hat. In Arkansas, all it took was one complaint (without any factual finding) and the shit would hit the fan. Honestly, the stuff that tries to get pinned down on candidates nowadays is borderline retarded. "Your brother is living in a shack, you asshole!" "Your daughter got pregnant, your fault!" "You don't have any experience! Neither do I, but I'm not dumb enough to run for president!"

I'm getting a little tired of the whole thing. Talk about the issues, let the sideline gossip be covered by TMZ.

It does seem like we're returning to a somewhat better for McCain than pre-convention status. I think we'll know for sure around Wednesday of next week. But what was Obama by about 2 pretty consistently in Gallup (so +5/6 in non trackers) will end up being a flat tie/slim McCain lead.

Anything that cuts down on specious convictions is good, given the exaggerated repercussions for sexual offenses, and anything that gets more reporting and convictions is good, given the exaggerated dangers of sexual predators (exaggerated in the second case not read as a pejorative).

Using education as your tool allows you to perform the latter without also doing more of the former. It's, like, someone is actually trying to fight this kind of crime from an effective standpoint instead of just showing how "tough" they are by increasing sentences and after-release penalties for offenders.

    It's, like, awesome.
