PS3 Accessory Question

I'm sorry if I'm putting this in the wrong place. I looked around for a general PS3 or hardware/accessory thread, but I didn't find anything.

I bought this thing here. As the review implies, and some of the comments outright state, I'm worried that the teeny little fans aren't doing anything. I don't want my shiny new PS3 to overheat and break, so...

Is it possible that this thing could be hurting the PS3? Should I just set it off to one side? Is there some (easy) way to modify the fans, the little vents, etc. to make it better? Or is it actually helpful? It switches between PS3 and my HDMI cable TV signal just fine, and the remote makes BDs play, so I'm happy enough with it that I don't mind having it uselessly sitting next to the PS3.

If it powers off the PS3 then for a start its siphoning away electricity it shouldn't be. But PS3's don't generally overheat as long as they're given plenty of ventalation so if it does have plenty of room, I'd go without that thing.

It can't turn the PS3 on or off, just switch HDMI plugs and control BDs when they're playing. It also hasn't caused the system to turn off randomly, if that's what you mean.

I'm leaning more and more towards putting it off to the side, but it does rest on top of it so nicely.

Does it need to be snapped onto the machine? If not, just connect it with a cable and shove it down the back of your cabinet.

It doesn't even snap so much as 'rest' on top of it. I can't hide it away, though, because the remote beams to the switcher, which has the fans in it.
