Nerdcore hip-hop and other genres - suggestions needed!
I've got a community radio segment in lil' ol' Adelaide, South Australia, and I've just started openly discussing games, music in games and music about games and other nerdy stuff. It started when I decided to play a selection of tracks from the GTA series and continued when PC Gamer UK brought MC Lars and MC Frontalot to my attention. Since then I've gathered MC Hawking and John Coulton music to play over the airwaves with the aim of promoting all things nerdish or geekish and the stuff Tycho mentions gets a listen and sometimes passed by so I want everyone who likes any genres to start recommending to me who is worth a listen and where I can get their stuff.
It's for the good of all.
Oh, and the radio station is 3d radio, 93.7fm, the show is called the "Four Course Breakfast" and I go by the moniker of "Lawrence of Arabica"
So come on people, name names.

Dr Octagon describes his music as Dadaist Hip Hop.
But he's a little crazy and used to be called Kool Keith.
MC Chris, his stuff is hit and miss. Half of it is a Satirical skwering of mainstream rap and hip hop, the other half is straight up nerdy fan service.
His best album is Dungeon Master of Ceremonies. It's pure audio gold.
It sounds like you need some chiptune music to mix in there. But before I get to that, I'd recommend that you try and find the song "B-Dash" by the Tongari Kids. Here's a video with it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvLIU_2S7XE#
Ok, back to the chiptunes. Essentially, electronic music created using old videogame system soundchips. 8bitpeoples is a label devoted completely to this style, and they just happen to have all of their releases available on their site through the creative commons license. Two of my favourites: Anamanaguchi Random
The most popular example of chiptune music would probably be Crystal Castles, a duo who have brought the style in a more appealing form for the indie/electronic crowd. http://www.myspace.com/crystalcastles
This stuff doesn't really deal with nerdy material as far as themes or lyrics go, but the actual music is quite nerdy enough. And excellent.

You ought to check out MC Hawking. I haven't listened to any of his newer stuff, but a lot of the older tracks are great. I think they're on an album called "A Brief History of Rhyme". I particularly like the one about MIT gang-wars.
There's a lot of violence and potentially offensive lyrical themes, though, so it might not be appropriate for radio. I recall MC Hawking coming down pretty hard on Christians in a few songs.
If you are playing coulton then you should definetly throw up some They Might Be Giants. They arent nerdy specifically but their lyrics are really intellegent and the sing about a wide variety of stuff. And since they've been around for 20+ years there is alot to choose from.
Also I gotta recommend Gnarles Barkley. They have some songs that would really appeal to a nerdy demographic like "Transformer" or "Whatever" or somthing like "Feng Shui" though I guess thats pretty hit or miss with alot of people.

You forgot to mention that he flows better than 99% of the so-called "legit" rappers in the music industry.

and he sounds like a little kid that inhaled a shit load of helium before each show.
It's not very obvious, but he references a lot of games. Lots of Zelda games mentioned in that one. (gotta find and kill my shadow self/ gotta dig up every secret seashell
Every boy I've ever loved has been digital)
Less obvious (and maybe too light on the nerd stuff) but very different than most of the video game influenced songs you will find. Also, he claims all his songs on HPC were influenced by a school of DnD magic. This article might be helpful.

I don't really listen to nerdcore, it seems about as relevant as hiphop about other hobbies like hiphop about specifically about pogs.
I'll suggest some good ol' hiphop that might not get mentioned here for the hell of it though.

I've played He Poos Clouds a few times - he's in the station music library and how can you go past a title like that - plus, the string arrangements. I'm not an avid final fantasy player but I've gotten rotten drunk watching others play it.
TMBG I saw play live in our town in the mid 90's. They did an acoustic set in one of the few indie record stores and I was lucky enough to stareat the backs of the heads of all the other patrons.
Luke Ski is good but I've a feeling too much could be fatal.
But let's keep on track here. It's got to be nerd or geek and especially funny. MC 900ft Jesus fits the bill - Vanilla Ice or eminem do not. I'm not after 'hard life' rap but quirky and humourous.
Thanks, btw, for the fump nod because the sarah palin songs were great.8-)
Astronautalis raps about Warhammer and general nerdiness, from time to time. Also, he is amazing.

I'm stoked that people are enjoying that as much as I did. He's got a lot of other stuff that may or may not be as fantastic - but is ALWAYS well thought out.
This. It's like a bunch of white kids from the suburbs, whose idea of hip hop mostly came from MTV, decided to reference a bunch of nerdy stuff in their raps thinking they're doing something new. Completely oblivious to the fact that hip hop have always had an affinity for oft-kilter references.

Most of them can't really rap anyway.

Okay. For those of you who didn't read the subject of the thread - I only asked for SUGGESTIONS not OPINIONS.
To head this DIGRESSION off I have started a new thread for those wanting to debate the pros and cons of nerdcore.
Not a big fan of nerdcore, though MF DOOM is pretty sick, and I like madlib's production style, but here are a couple songs by traditional MCs that may interest some nerds.
Masta Ace ft Eminem, some other dude - Hellbound (over a Soul Calibur beat)
Jedi Mind Tricks ft Non Phixion - The Wolf (over a Max Payne beat)

Sorry about that, I made it my quest to express my displeasure at the existence of the term nerdcore everytime I see a nerdcore thread :P. Anyway, here's a couple of songs from traditional hip hop artists that you might be interested in;
Del Tha Funkee Homosapien - Proto Culture (tribute to videogames)
The Last Emperor - Secret Wars part 1 & part 2 (the title is pretty self-explanatory if you're familiar with Marvel comics)

MC Chris, Astronautilus, darkest of the hillside thickets and Crystal Castles have all been obtained. Dr Octagon is in the process of being acquired.
Baddd Spellah has been helpful and it pitching the new Frontalot album which is a must buy.
Any of you heard of TooFarTV. Their Nerdrap is quite funny.
