Need a New Vent Headset

captainkcaptaink TexasRegistered User regular
Well, WAR is here, and that means I'll be on Vent again. I found out yesterday that my current headset's mic is broken. I need a new one, and I'd like to spend a little more than I did on that one, get a better, sturdier one.

Is there any feature to keep the cord from dragging all over the floor? I am always running over it with my chair, and I figure that's not good for it. Not to mention accidentally pulling it off the desk occasionally.

I'm not an audiophile, I'm looking for something around or under $50.

You could either get a wireless headset or run your cords behind and across your desk. When you take your headphones off, get in the habit of setting them on the desk and not the arm of your chair.

I would suggest the Plantronics .audio 90 headset. It's comfortable, inexpensive, and has good sound quality. At the price, you can get several for backups. I dont have the .audio 90 itself, I have the usb version, the gamecom pro 1, and i've been using it for several years, with my cat dropping them and chewing on the volume adjustment part, it's been working as good as the day I bought it.

See the anandtech thread about it here.

Also, I strongly recommend mounting a hook on your desk or wall to hang your headset on, it helps quite a bit.

    Haha, that's the one I'm replacing. At $8 it's a steal though.

I also need a new headset. Mine was the free bundle with UT2k4 and has since lost all soft foamy things. It's really uncomfortable to wear.

Is this .audio 90 super comfortable? I care about that more than audio quality.

It's pretty comfortable. I can wear them with my glasses (although I usually don't) and I can wear them for hours without my ears getting hot or being uncomfortable.

What will the difference between usb and analog be? Are there quality or performance differences?

Go with analog for sure. Using USB for anything audio is a dodgy prospect, and it costs you more for less in return--the audio quality suffers and you've got far less control over settings, etc.

I'm on my second Plantronics .audio series headset now, and I've got no complaints. My first one lasted me more than two years, and this one is about to hit the two year mark itself. They really don't have any competition in the sub-$50 market--when the one I'm using now finally breaks I'll just get another one.

Been using them for over a year now and aside from looking like a space cadet, they have worked very very well.

Out of about 10 headsets I've owned this is the only one I've actually liked. It's comfortable, has good sound/mic quality, and is relatively durable.

Analog is the way to go, the only reason I went with the USB version is convenience, I had my Logitech Z680 plugged into my audigy and couldn't be bothered with it.

Sennheiser makes a good product for those looking to spend a bit more.

I've been using some Grado SR-60's and they sound great, but all the mic solutions I've tried are either really low-quality clip-on mics or a mic that sits on my desk and picks up noisy keyboard clacking while I'm playing a game. Does anyone know of a 3.5mm headset that's got really good sound quality (like the SR-60's)? Hopefully one that doesn't press down on the ears too much?

    Check out the steelsound headsets.

I have a slightly lower end model from WOOT, and love it.
    Comfy with great sound.
Also the microphone, while looking like some strange alien proboscis, retracts neatly into the headphones.
This is an excellent feature imo. Its nice not having to deal with that mic all the time.

Well I like being able to hot-swap between speakers and headset so USB is a no-go for me. Is there a site that does actual comparisons between the sound quality of different headsets? All I see are customer reviews that say it sounds "good", which isn't very helpful.

Mono sucks though. The .90s I linked to earlier are about the same price and have 2 speakers.
