I have a HLDS DVD Drive, that was recently transplanted from my old decrepit computer into my shiny new one. I hadn't used it till today(Warhammer Online) and much to my dismay my computer says it does not exist. I checked the Device Manager, which agrees with that. Then I rebooted and checked BIOS which says I do, in fact, have a DVD Drive. So I double-checked my ribbon cable and power cable and the such and everything seemed to be in working order, but it still does not show up.
Alright, lets get to the basics of the problem: what version of windows are you running? Also, you didn't answer my question about device manager, whether everything is properly installed there and whatnot.
so far everything I'm finding is saying to remove those upper and lower filters from the registry like that knowledge base link, and thats actually also why I asked about Easy CD creator, but I guess it happens with a few burning programs. I'd seriously suggest that to start

Secondly, have you ever had some form of easy CD/DVD creator installed?
Second - On the last computer, yes, on this one I only have iTunes.

So when's the last time you used the drives, and whats changed since then?
And I guess when you checked device manager everything has a proper driver installed that is listed?
and I'm running XP.
If you look in the device manager and you see the drives there then you know they'reworking, the filters are just messed up...
Slick the link, follow the instructions...
