Strange computer problem

KKprofitKKprofit Registered User regular
So I had a computer I built, and it was running fine.

My graphics card died.

Ok. So I installed a new graphics card.

Then i started noticing spyware creeping in... So I decided what the hell, I'll do a clean install of xp-pro.

Xp installs, then I go to install the driver for my onboard LAN and it freezes up. No choice but to restart. Windows freezes during the loading bar screen. No dice.

I installed windows 30 odd some times with 2 different discs. The only thing that seems to lock it is the driver.

I updated the BIOS. Nada.

So I got another copy of the drivers. Same.

So I got a damnable ethernet card. Windows will not recognize it.

The internets are not telling me much, any advice?

O.K. the sonofabitch is toying with me now...

It took the driver... and connected to the internet... I restart and it freezes at the windows loading screen.

Press F8 before you get the Windows loading screen. If you time it right (you can press it a bunch if you need to) you'll see a list of start up options.

Choose the one that shows logging or whatever. You'll see exactly at what point windows stops loading. Then you Google that file to see why it makes Windows stop loading.

I'm pretty sure its the on board ethernet driver...

But I enabled the logging option.. but there is no text... just the regular windows loading screen that moves in super slow motion... almost frozen.

Tested my HD and RAM. No errors.

Started safe mode and the last driver it loads before stopping is Mup.sys

Internet search tells me nothing other than the fact that this is a common file to get hung on, with a thousand possible solutions. I've been trying a few...

The only change between working windows and non working windows is the new video card... could the video card be keeping windows from installing correctly?

Video card is unlikely, however if it is causing more power draw from your PSU and the PSU isn't up to the task it could cause freezing, but more likely a blue screen.

What video card and cpu, how many watts on the psu?

Ok... it only freezes if I install the ethernet adapter. I can do whatever else... and its fine. Only installing the ethernet adapter crashes it.

This current install of windows, I got my video card installed... I installed fallout, played it. watched part of a dvd.

Now Im installing the drivers for my onboard lan:

Frozen. Not frozen exactly... if I move the mouse... then the cursor moves after about 20 seconds or so, just updating the position then freezes again.

Ok... reset the CMOS and the thing booted. I went online and downloaded and installed avast and restarted. SO far so good.

Apparently there was some problem with the CMOS... not sure what it was... but that fixed it for now at least.

Had I seen this earlier, I would have said motherboard fault. CMOS defaults is a good place to start, there could have been an issue with onboard ethernet settings there and the driver installing (like it *has* to be default settings for the driver install before you mess with the settings.

Also - don't bother with the Asus utilities that come on the disc. Waste of time. Just install updated drivers from their website.
