Strange Question...

I know this is an odd question and I'm hoping that a lot of you know what I'm talking about. I'm hoping someone could tell me what is that smell in Chinese restaurants (fancy ones) or Chinese stores when you enter. It's a sweet smell that's also kind of..tangy? I'm would like to buy some incense but I wouldn't know what it would be called or if it even is one smell and not just one GIANT smell combined.

Any suggestions?

Probably a mixture of cooking ingredients. Maybe predominantly Chinese Five Spices and honey combined with roasted meats such as pork?

Well, I would agree if it was a restaurant only situation, but I'm talking about just normal every day Asian own stores (I say Chinese because it's Chinatown). Hence I thought it might be some incense or a candle.

best bet is to look up 'chinese incense' and buy a few varieties. check each and if you find it, bingo.
    if not, your out $5.

Well i'm fairly sure "the best bet" would just be to ask in a place where you smell it.

Lots of spices perhaps, but star anise is a big part of the smell, and if you do home-made Chinese food makes me immediately go "Ah! Proper Chinese food!"

Ditto on the star anise, it's the main thing that makes Szechuan sauce smell the way it does. Sometimes it's part of those pot-puorri smelly bag thingies you can get in some stores.
