It can connect to the network but there's some sort of MTU error. Any ideas?

Is your college running one of those Cisco Clean Access setups that seemingly every university is now running? These are the ones that require you to "log on" to the network before you can use it?

This is a problem you need to discuss with your campus's network administrator. Worst case they tell you "Hey buddy, fuck off you can't play games on our internets." Best case, they ask you for some information about your console then configure it to run on their network.

best bet is to try to run it through a laptop or somehow through you desktop.
i think if you have a computer with internet you can funnel it to the 360 (not positive though)

    Hi,

This is a copy and paste from the Microsoft tech support website regarding your problem, it seems that your college is using a gateway or router incompatible with XBOX Live:

While attempting to perform the network test on the Test Xbox LIVE Connection screen, MTU status displays "Failed"

    SYMPTOMS
You cannot connect to Xbox LIVE. When you perform the Test Live Connection test, the test for MTU displays Failed.

    CAUSE
You experience this behavior if your router or the gateway is incompatible with Xbox LIVE, or if your router or the gateway has an incorrect MTU setting.

This test confirms that the network has sufficient Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU). MTU is a setting on the router or the gateway that can affect network performance. Xbox LIVE requires a minimum MTU setting of 1364. If your console does not pass this test, you cannot sign in to Xbox LIVE.

If you have multiple consoles that are connected by using the same connection, you may cause a failed MTU test. A failed MTU test may also be caused by sharing the connection with your computer.

    THINGS TO TRY
Before you follow these steps, make sure that you power cycle all the devices on the network.

For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
944294 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944294/) How to power cycle devices
    1. If you are using an Xbox LIVE-compatible device, you should not receive this error message.

If you have an Xbox LIVE-compatible device, follow these steps:
    a. Visit the following Web site to determine whether you have the correct firmware version that has been certified as compatible:
    http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox360/homenetworking/equipment.htm (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox360/homenetworking/equipment.htm)
    b. See the router or gateway instruction manual for information about how to change the MTU setting.
    2. If you share a connection with a router and a modem, try a direct connection without the router.

Note This eliminates any router configuration problems.

If you can connect without the router, you may have to set the MTU on the router to 1364. To do this, or determine whether your router supports this feature, see the router support documentation or contact the router support group.

It's less likely that they have incompatible hardware, and more likely that they've configured their compatible hardware to be incompatible with XBL use.

At my college, which utilizes Cisco Clean Access, you have to contact the network admin and register your console by giving them the console serial #, console MAC address, and the room on campus you'll use it from. Then they add it to their 'allow' list and you can go do whatever you want on XBL.

You really, really should talk to your network admins and find out what they can do for you. Surely you're not the only dude on campus who wanted to log onto XBL, they ought to have a policy for console usage.

Or, if you don't want to go straight through sitting on hold-times for your network admin, check for University Information Technology Services or something similar-sounding. I guarantee that if they have something in place that makes it difficult to connect to XBL, they'll have an article or FAQ about it online.

If you hook up your 360 to a computer that has an internet connection (through a spare ethernet port), and then bridge the 2 connections, that should work fine.

Just make sure that if there's a login page or anything that you are logged in via the computer you're connected to.
