Haven't really read through the entire thread, but-- goddamn. I remember reading about this game almost 2 years ago, then updates on actual progress being cryptic.
I am enjoying it so far, great atmosphere, tho was having some sound issues with objects and creatures in the distance sounding like they where in my face.
Weapon accuracy is tough to get use to, the starter pistol and shotgun are weaksauce but once you get your first assault rifle you hit a bit better with it if you aim. Definately can exploit some AI qwirks (Trees it seems) but have noticed the AI to be pretty smart, was flanked a few times and the packs of dogs are definately mean, they will go after you if there is a bunch of em.
tip for everyone at the second area DO NOT join a faction the other factions will shoot you on sight making you miss out on a lot of side qeusts as duty holds 1 town and i think freedom has a town somewhere else to (i joined freedom) besides it changes your rep into terrible because all of the stalker kills you will make.
The game doesn't work with Vista. It'll crash after you try to save or after extended times. In the log, it shows a buildup of memory usage and then it crashes. The game developer is releasing a patch soon to fix this issue. Seems to me if they would have at least tested it with Vista, they'd have discovered this before it shipped. Guess they didn't bother to run it on Vista at all. Anyways, does anyone who has it now know how to get the day and night cycle working? I have full dynamic light on, but the cycle doesn't show.

They're releasing a patch to fix this. As far as when, all they said was "post release."

Alright, been looking forward to this game for a couple years now. Just installed and started playing, but I have a funky graphic error. Was hoping somebody here might have seen something like it and would have a suggestion. First a quick rundown of my system; 2.8ghz dualcore P4, 1GB RAM, and a GeForce7300.
Now first off, I have Static lighting on (obviously) and the game runs fine. Smooth as butter.... except for the sky. When I look up in the sky, it's like the sky is just copying over itself ... it's hard to explain. If I go into windowed mode then the game runs perfect, but in full screen the sky is broken.
I've messed with the settings, but the game runs smoothly so long as I keep lighting set to static. Anyone with an Nvidia card ever had their sky go crazy in game?
I've been dying to play this game for ages, so right now I'm just playing it windowed. I'm only an hour in, but it's been fun so far.
Id maintain patience, its a rewarding virtue with this game.
Except for me, where they didn't bother to even test the game with Vista, and thus I can't play it until they release the patch. But who knows when that'll be.

How the fuck could they have released it when it runs so horribly on Vista? What where they thinking? Does it not work at all or does it just glitch more with Vista people?
Remember kids, we're talking about a group of eastern European developers. That is not to say the end result is bad, but by and large, it means it will be buggy. We're lucky they got to work on it for six years rather than six months.

Like western developers do so much better with these types of games

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
Okay, this game looks interesting, now i have one question, is this in anyway like the game boiling point, that game was okay, you have this big open world and factions are fighting, then it goes very dead and nothing. and is their cars in this or is it all on foot?

I wasn't making a judgement. I do appreciate the efforts of developers in the region. Many are trying to keep genres alive that have all but been abandoned by developers elsewhere. But they do tend to be made on small budgets in a relatively short time span, so the games do end up being rather buggy. STALKER's devs were quite privileged to get what they did from THQ.

Not at all the same and it's all on foot. Vehicles were planned, but were removed because of complications with the anomalies. The code is still present in the game, it's just not utilized by it.
Okay, so Vista crash. Fuck. Still picking it up though, I'll just look at the box for awhile. Besides that how do you guys think it will run on:
2GB RAM
AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHZ
Radeon x1650 Pro
The multiplayer for this has been crazy fun. Something about the map layouts, the organic and decaying atmosphere, and the gritty realism makes it very tense. Playing with some of the guys on Vent we found ourselves less charging and running/gunning and more carefully sneaking around and ambushing each other. It's very tense.

I believe Croteam, the guys who made Serious Sam, were also Eastern European. Look how much ass their game kicked.
Surprised this game came out already myself. Hopefully I can get my hands on it! I saw the screenshot posted about a page back with the cameo guy in it. The inventory screen immediately got my attention.
So. Vehicles in multiplayer? Hell, vehicles at all?
Forgive the ignorance, but I lost all interest in the game when it was confirmed so much was being cut out and yet everyone seems to like it...
For the love of... so much being cut? Where the hell did you hear that? They barely cut out anything. The most prominent one was vehicles, because there are so many anomalies that you'd drive through them and die. However, someone on their forums said you get vehicles later in the game, but I don't believe it. Mods, I'm sure, will add them back; I imagine people will get frustrated driving into anomalies, though. After that, the only thing I can name is eating or you die. You still have to consume food, but I don't think not eating will kill you anymore. I've been following the game since it was announced, and they really haven't cut much at all.

Okay, so "so much" is unfair: "so much of what I was interested in" is a more apt turn of phrase, notably the whole "non-static" mission thing with wandering rival Stalkers clearing up objectives or marauding hordes of beasties fucking up the landscape even if you're not around to see it...
The story occuring whether you're around or not sounded really interesting, you see, but the fact is that in the real world I imagine it would piss everyone the hell off.
"Who the fuck killed the final boss without me?! GODDAMN!"
But they've still got anomalies, ammo types, above par (or at least interesting) AI and the whole artifact thing, so meh, sounds solid enough.
I am enjoying the fact that it crashes on Vista even more, than I am enjoying this game.
All the early adopters deserve this shit, when they plunge in head first into a new os.
BTW, no where does this game mention that it supports Vista out of the box, so shut your yups about it running poorly on vista.
I find it amusing that people like this are somehow able to breathe on their own
Also, the game is eating my multiple monitor vista setup alive. maybe i'll switch from my 20"wide+17" setup to a single 24" on my 8800gts
Christ that's a pretty hostile thing for him to have said about it.
I think it's very understandable it would work like crap with Vista prior to any patches, but no need to piss on them about it.

My god the AI in this game is fucking awesome. The military just assaulted the town I was in and was systematically clearing it out until the stalkers rallied and pushed them back. I had assumed that the all of the military grunts were dead (As the NPC's had pretty much resumed what they were doing after they had executed any wounded military grunts that had gotten left behind. Though in retrospect the guards were going nuts, checking the entire area bit by bit.) when all of a sudden the guy I was walking past took a bullet to the head and died. It turned out that the military stalkers fell back, left a rear-guard to cover their retreat while they found places to snipe at the town from. Needless to say I was impressed. The military also won because they managed to put down most of the more heavily armed guards before the NPC's in the town could figure out what the hell was going on.

People's expectations would appear to be the bane of this game. As far as I'm aware there are non static events as groups run into each other but they kept the main storyline set. It shouldn't be that hard to understand that if they tried fill every promise, especially some of the things from early in it's development, the game would either never see the light of day or become the mess we all feared it would become.

This game just released out of fucking nowhere.
Haven't really read through the entire thread, but-- goddamn. I remember reading about this game almost 2 years ago, then updates on actual progress being cryptic.
...and now its out. Without even any warning.
Looks like I'll have to find a copy.
he even has the glasses and he was dead near some anamolies
(its a character from another game)

Definately has that fallout feel to it.
kinda hoping this is what bethseda has in mind for F3.
loving the "loot everyone you kill" gameplay.
and yes, that first pistol is total weaksauce.

At least a quicksave key would be nice....
Yeah, F6 and F7 are quick save and quick load. It also auto-saves every time you move from one area to another.

*EDIT
I'm not the only one with this glitch. Someone else made a video of it;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgfO7yBJ3LY
That's exactly what is happening to me. Game runs smooth, but sky is broken ... hopefully the video will help lead to some solutions.

I was expecting an open-area style FPS a la Far Cry, but I'm seeing lots of RPG conventions.
2GB RAM
AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHZ
Radeon x1650 Pro
And Vista
It's an FPS/RPG, or that's how the publisher is billing it. It's almost like Oblivion meets Fallout meets Far Cry.
That sounds exceptionally temping.
