Ok, I've read it now, so I can read this thread...
Uh, I thought you meant we finally found out how all the men died.
I think we did, and no one has realized it yet.
The morphogenetic fields thing is NOT a red herring.
It's been alluded to at least two other times in the book, going as far back as like the SF arc I think.
As it appears now, something happened to man's collective consciousness when Dr M cloned his daughter. My guess is that with cloning perfected the human genome "decided" that men were no longer required for the continued existence of the human race.

Yeah, I got that out of it, but I'm choosing to ignore it until they say for sure, because that's a horrible explanation for how all of the men died. Not to mention the fact that it doesn't make sense, considering that cloning is obviously not a superior method of reproduction. It decreases humanity's fitness.
How so?
On a social level it's actually a great commentary. I sort of like the way that it's going.
The whole point of sexual reproduction is genetic variety which leads to greater survivability as a species. If it was better to keep genes the same then we'd all reproduce like bacteria.

How does it decrease the fitness of humanity? The women who who carry genetically engineered fetuses develop fibroid-like tumors in their wombs. It causes them to die if their uteri aren't removed. It's not an improvement over natural impregnation if the person giving birth dies or has to have her uterus removed so she doesn't die, and therefore can't have any more children. Also, without genetic recombination (since we've only seen them make flat-out clones of people), the degree of variation within the genepool decreases and humanity is less likely to survive cataclysmic events.
I understand the surface "women literally don't need men, so they all died" social commentary aspect, but that's what the entire story has been about. Every arc we've seen women who have managed to create somewhat normal lives without men. The problem with it in this instance is that the women who tried cloning failed, but the man who tried cloning succeeded.

but then why did at least three males survive? It's not still monkey poo, is it?
Oh, and the learning things through our DNA thing? Such complete bullshit. Millions of people know how to do algebra, but that doesn't help out the kids in school. And even if it did, waiting for the twenty other kids in your class to do their homework would make no difference on a planet of billions.
Yeah, the collective consciousness angle needs to be a red herring. I hate to be one of those guys who bitches about one thing ruining the whole experience, but if they go with some crazy hippy crap that doesn't fit withwhat we've seen before as the final twist I'm pretty sure that'll be it for me.
How exactly do you have a vaccine for collective consciousness? And how does species awareness extend across all species? God that'd be incredibly stupid. Please, PLEASE, let it just be one last feint before we get the real answer.

Even if she actually believed in learning through DNA, I think she was being facetious when she suggested it could help Mann do her homework.
In any case, Daddy Mann's hot stuff on the side clearly wasn't very smart (compared to her peers). I think she was only brought into the story so we'd think she was Toyota's boss.

Dr M is the one who sent the monkey to Dr Mann. He knew the plague was coming but wasn't sure if he'd been vaccinated himself so he sent Ampersand to his daughter knowing that she'd be able to continue his research.
It's been clearly established that Ampersand is the only reason Yorick and the baby are alive, I'm fairly positive he'll end up being the reason Dr M is alive as well.
This really, really makes me hope Vaughan never gives us a straight answer, but rather gives just enough clues to give most of the popular theories some validity.
Really, what it boils down to is that he's daring to argue with some of you, and as a result is being attacked.
Stop being such fucking babies.
Also, this isn't the thread for this. Keep it on topic.

I actually agree with you on this point. Something as good as the Y series shouldn't be an open and shut case. I hope that he leaves a lot of room for interpretation. It's that sort of thing that keeps things alive long after they're done.
Did he ever say if he had the reason for the plague in mind from the start?

I read Volumes 5 and 6 on Saturday, in like an hour. I borrowed them from my old boss. He wasn't finished volume 7 so I couldn't read that until today. He apparently got everyone at the store hooked on Y, even though I'm the one who told him to read it a while ago (when I was reading the first or second volume at work) and Saturday he was like "oh you read Y?"
but then I read volumes 7 and the rest of the issues out today and I wasn't really phased by the reveal
When her dad showed up I didn't even go, "oh another guy" until Yorick said "not another robot"
The idea that perfecting our cloning technology/technique would cause the collective consciousness of the human genome to decide men are no longer required is seriously stupid on many levels.
Genetic diversity aside, how would we be expected to be able to clone enough people? It's not like a state of the art cloning lab can be created overnight or anything. And if it was decided that men were no longer needed why weren't all the women turned into lesbians? I mean how cruel would that be to have all the men die off and be stuck straight? Who would want to live in such a world?
It feels like this comic wasn't thought out all the way. It had a great idea to start with but now near the end it's like the author is scrambling to make something up at the last second.
I'd go with a tailor made genetic virus that only goes after males, it makes more sense than what we've been handed so far.

I really don't think that that's the cause of the mass male extinction. Like I said, it doesn't account for all the male animals dying.

BOO YEAH I AM A GENIUS
wait was that the big revelation?
i...i really thought it was supposed to be obvious
[spoiler:ecc05ef0f6]Morphogenic field business was a red herring, because that's way too Animal Man-ish for a book like this.[/spoiler:ecc05ef0f6]
...but, really, the reason why what happened happened wasn't really revealed here. Just some more things hinted at.
Arg, this is why I wait for trade!
Uh, I thought you meant we finally found out how all the men died.
Dr. Mann's dad used his army of clones. Duh.

That's a terrible twist.

Life is just a race to be number 1. When you cross the finish line it's all over and everything dies. Go team!

How is that trolling? His post was fucking good.
I swear, some of you are just looking for a reason to hate this guy.
Just because Terrorbyte doesn't troll some of the time doesn't mean he doesn't troll at all.
I agree that he wasn't really trolling in this insatnce, but there are plenty of other times when he was trolling.

Yeah, I went, 'Oh man, Alison's dad!'
and a minute later I went, 'OH SHIT ANOTHER MAN'

On that note, will Volume 8 or 9 be the last, I know the series is ending this year.
