heys guys,
i just started galactic civilizations 2 and played through my first game. it was a lotta fun (although the game takes forever, felt like i just pressed next turn a billion times), but not quite what i was looking for.
you see, i'm an old master of orion player and ive got a jonesing to play another game like it. my favorite part of the game was designing the ships, then building like 30 large ships at a time until i had the ultimate fleet. are there any good space strategy games where you can stack ships (like 32000 dreadnaughts) and have the epic battles of old?

You sir are looking for Space Empires. Either 4 or 5 will cure that craving. It like MOO if MOO had a better ship design system and a less confusing economy.
