Alright, a few months ago my computer was hit by lighting, surge protector didn't do diddly

now, this fried the power supply (fixed) and caused the ethernet plug to not work

There was a thread about this but for the life of me I can't find the damn thing

The ethernet cord works, the router works, it all works, it's the connection to my computer that's the problem. It should light up green when you plug it in, it doesn't.

I was getting by fine by leeching internet from my roommate with a wireless dongle but now that's stopped working and I have some spare cash lying around, I figure I might give a repair a try.

my computer is a little old (6-ish years) but if you tell me I need a new computer I'll cry.

also I am computer retarded so please keep that in mind

You'd be hard pressed to find one in a store/online that wasn't PCI. Hell, if you want, get USB.

You're the one with the computer. Go ask google. I doubt anyone here is in a position to offer a 100% guarantee on something they've never seen.

But yes, it should work. Rip out the old one and bring it with you if you want to ensure to avoid a return trip.

You have a desktop and not a laptop, right?
You're not running some funky operating system like some obscure flavor of Linux, right?

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

DO not rip the connection out if it's soldered to the motherboard though. I only say this because I've seen it done.

If you're afraid of opening up your computer just get this. At $22 it's probably 2 or 3 times more expensive than a PCI NIC, but it's easy. If this is for a desktop that you don't move around you might want to get one that doesn't have a pop-up port so that it is a bit sturdier.

alright well I got the NIC card

my old one was soldered to the motherboard so no, I'm not taking it out

just used one more of my PCI slots

works and I am internet bound again

my PC doesn't have a wireless card and I have no real networks to bum off any more so the Nic card was the cheapest and fastest way

    thanks

    solved
