Could I plug a wireless access point right into a modem.. or do I need a router?

What the topic says.

Can they be used as a wireless only router or do you need to first plug them into a real router?

you should be able to do that, although then you'll have no wired access at all.

I tried that with my WAP when the power supply on my router died and it didn't work. I'm no expert though.

I'm fairly sure that won't work. You'll need a router.

Should work assuming your modem can assign you proper DHCP info.

Assuming your modem is a router, then yes.

Like others have noted the modem would have to support DHCP. An issue that could arise from this is some ISPs will support this, but will charge you for each IP your are using. It would probably be better to get a router.
