I downloaded the demo off steam and it was really, really awful. Why do people think a tutorial makes for an exciting/acceptable demo?

Well, if they put you down later in the game, there might be story spoilers. Plus, by the middle of the game you have all the minions lots of control options and set pieces and it might be a bit much for a casual gamer considering if he should buy.

I have question about the camera. I played the demo, and it was ok, but I thought the auto camera in Overlord 1 was just fine. Is there a way to make the right stick just control your minions?

Im not sure about the 360 version, which I probably would have gotten if not for the fact that I am in egypt and would have had to wait longer. I will say this about the PC version, though-most of the time, the controls are great. The only time I've ever found them to be a problem are when you're trying to "sweep" the minions through places only they can go-the mouse just doesnt respond very well to this. Maybe its just my mouse, who knows-but I looked up on some other forums and it seems to be common. Its by no means game breaking.

Although there is a certain elevator puzzle being the bane of my existence earlier today, that was really hampered by using the mouse-I found a work around(thank god for banners!)

The game runs really well on PC-I dont think I've encountered a single actual bug so far, aside from having my minions get me stuck by trapping me while they were carrying something.

I know I'm going to get this, because I enjoyed the first on Xbox 360 and PC. Now, which version do I go with?

On Amazon, the PC version is twenty dollars less. On the other hand, split-screen is a pain on a 22" Acer LCD, versus my 37" LG HDTV. Keeping in mind I am something of a meiser, which way should I go?

I've only played the 360 version, but I'd advise getting the demos for both, then seeing how the controls compare. It also lets you know if you're going to have any issues running it on your PC.

Already did that. I noticed some slowdown in the Xbox 360 demo which was not present on my PC (I have a somewhat high-end system).

On the other hand, I'm going to be using an Xbox 360 controller no matter what. Hmmm...I might have to try the Xbox 360 demo again and see if the slowdown was noticeable.

question about one of the secret trophies:
    Ladies Man:

Ive gotten all 3 of the Special Friend trophies, so what do I need to do for this one?

I would hate to miss out on one before finishing. I am on the last mission string now.

Also, where is a good place to hunt a ton of Gnomes? I need about 750 more to kill :D

Its the same game on the PC and 360. Controls are probably nicer on the 360 (assuming you don't use a gamepad on the PC). Is split screen on your larger TV worth $20?

    Seconded.

In fact I was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to play the Overlad since the demo had the tutorial in a different part. Then when the game started and I was playing a pint-sized lord-of-darkness-to-be, I was grinning ear to ear.

Goddammit. So I decided to dl the expansion for the original game, but forgot that all my previously saved data on my hd got wiped for some reason months ago. Ok, I figure I'll just start a new file then play the new dlc. I got past the first boss and found the reds and all, then I stopped playing. I go back later and there's no file to select. I thought it autosaved every time you go to the castle or something, or am I wrong?

I just love that they start singing when disguised. gave me total Spaceballs flashbacks to the jawa guys in it.

Well, it's nice to have the option (really, the idea of split-screen play is pretty awesome, but I'm sure it would be accompanied by pretty strenuous slowdown, like every other split-screen game).

I use an Xbox 360 controller on my PC for games like this (I have a wireless receiver from MS). I think I'm going to go with the Xbox 360 version, simply because I really don't think anyone's going to play this game online on the PC much (pretty much no-one) since it isn't a huge title, and things do look better on my HDTV than my Acer LCD. Hope I don't regret it...

Go back to the place where you possessed your green minion for the semi stealth mission. I do believe that any gnome cage will spawn 5 gnomes periodically, forever.
trying to finish up the tower upgrades and the last armor/helm set before continuing to the end game.

I wanted to do this but I'm lacking a whole ton of gold. I believe you can only upgrade all your minions and make an armor or leave out the blues and make the final set because of the lack of/ limited number of dark crystals.

IF you have the 360 version and IF you were NOT playing with Xbox Live hooked up...

It could be that the update (but not the xpac) for Overlord 1 was bumped off after you dled the updates for several other games. I cannot remember the number, but after getting a certain number of games get patches, your 360 will start deleting the oldest patch to make room for the next, even if your HD is virtually empty.

IF this is what happened, Overlord 1 won't load up any xpac saves, even though it detects the expansion on the HD. You would have to log back onto Xbox Live again to patch the game again to play that save. (and don't worry about overwriting it by mistake, regular saves and xpac saves are seprate, and the reg only overwrites the xpac file when you dl the xpac for the first time.)

ok, the Ladies Man achievement/trophy is interesting...

someone on GameFAQs finally figured it out and posted how to get it.

I'd have never figured this out on my own. Especially since its technically a secret one, so you have to know about it to even start looking for it.
Just like how you get the "Special Friend" scenes with each of the 3 mistresses, this one is similar.
    -Overlord Banners
-2 each of the Kelda, Juno, and Fay items (so one gets Banners and Bed, etc.)

Hmm, I think I was connected while playing the game earlier.

I may have misread the quit game message and say i didn't want to save before quitting, but I didn't think my whole file would be gone because of that, maybe jsut the last 5-10 minutes.

wow so on the stealth mission,
I kill all the towers, and the searchlight is still there, went away and came back, still there.

sometimes this game presents a puzzle that looks like it has a logical solution, but then when it isnt semi obvious i just force it and loose all my minions and get past. Did I miss something? Also arent greens suppose to jump from ledges to ambush? running out of the spider temple I almost got owned when the guy with the lighting gun was there and there wasnt a real good way to get him to face away.

Hmm- playing the 1st one I just started taking note of my corruption level, and I wish it was a little more clear on it, because I just now realized I apparently am unable to be 100% corrupt, or 0% corrupt. I have been being as corrupt as possible, but I had no idea it was possible to burn down that elven forest by using reds - and since I used browns, the forest never burned, and now I cant be 100% evil.

Kinda really frusterated, because I wanted that achievement, but still really loving the game.

Are you sure you killed all the towers and completed the quest to kill them? In my play through I totally missed the first tower and ran past it.
I don't think it can be emphasized enough that there is a lack of cues in the game. Towards the end I just used myself to clear the path as much as I could. Minion deaths became so annoying at that point :(

I havent had the time or patience to figure out what it is I need to do. Theres just a ton of soldiers and a spear shooting bastard that kills me every time. And I cant break through the soldiers.

I haven't gotten to it yet, but I think you have to buy 2 items for each mistress, so they each have one thing in a room. The only bit I know for sure is that you need the Overlord banner, as it's a neutral item that won't tip the balance in any direction (plus it shows that you're the one in charge)

I've rented the Wii game, and since someone earlier in the thread was asking about it...

    Overlord: Dark Legend

It's an Overlord game on the Wii! The controls are above-average for a 3rd party, there is still some spots where it seems your fighting against it, but they are few, and for the most part you can do what you want. other than the pointer and the act of throttling/charging up your minions there are few motion controls (you can attack by shaking the Nunchuck, but that is optional, as there is a button for it as well). Perhaps because of the few hiccups, minions are a bit more automated: when following behind you, they will automaticly attack opponents you engage, pick up any gold, equipment or lifeforce nearby (only 1 type of lifeforce for all minions in this game) and perhaps best of all, blues will automaticly revive nearby dead minions! No more need to control them directly! Which is a good thing since you have to cycle minion types, and there is no middle ground between "call back one minion of the color you've chosen" and "Call back every single minion on the map" like there is in 1 and 2.

The Story is full of classic Overlord humor. Rhianna Pratchett's handwork shows, and the guy who does Gnarl and some of the other voices returns as well. Arguably, the funniest moment of the game happens pretty early, but then, how could you beat (minor
the Halfling Jester snapping and attacking the castle with a pumpkin-launching "Contraption of DOOM!"
The Story ends kinda aruptly though. It's nowhere near as bad as Halo 2, but more that they build up to something that would be pretty awesome to play through... and it unfolds is the final cutsence. The game seems like it recycles a lot of the music and sound effects from the first game as well, but thankfuly, it was the good stuff.

As for Gameplay, the game is on the short and easy side. Empathis on easy. Since none of the upgrades cost minions, and you only need to collect 1 type of lifeforce, you have no need to preserve them whatsoever (unless you like the hats they wear, as every minion, not just Browns, show off their hats) and even then, fully upgraded, it takes a lot of damage to kill off a fully upgraded (through the forge) minion, even for Blues and Reds. The max minion cap is 20, with your cap rising 2 or 3 with every upgrade you find.

There are no choices to be Evil or Very Evil, you can only be Evil. You cannot harm villagers unless it's part of a quest, you cannot ransack anyones homes, though everything outside thier homes is fair game, and your never given the choice to screw them over in any way. Framerate drops at times, though fortuantly, it seems to be in very specific areas or events, and your minion count doesn't seem to make it worse.

Overall, it was worth the rent, and might be worth a purchace if you can't get enough Overlord.

If you can, crank up sensitivity on your mouse.

I'm used to playing with pretty low sensitivity for accuracy, but after the fourth (or fifth?) try at the last elevator, I cranked it up as high as it would go and got it immediately afterwards. Barring that, someone uploaded a savegame on the official forums that was made promptly after the elevator sequence.

FWIW, someone from CodeMasters said they were "looking into [that section]."

Finished it, very underwhelmed. For a start its just not fucking fun to play. I was brought in at first because it retained a lot of the charm that I liked about the first one, the minions singing in disguise and such but playing is just a pain. He moves slow, your minions and targeting are clumsy and going anywhere or getting something feels like a chore. Oh I forgot a house round there? I'll spend 2 minutes walking around the corner because I can't jump.

Blues are as useless as ever. Worst criminal however is that customisation has been thrown out the window, I seem to recall being able to customise the exterior of your tower and lots of little things but what you can do is very limited and there are only 3 different variations for various reasons. I dont know how many forge items there are, I found two and they didn't unlock a lot of stuff either, just one new armor, one new helmet and a few weapons of which I know nothing in terms of stats or usefullness not that it matters since most enemies soak up damage like a sponge even with a full contingent of high level minions.

It also is very short in terms of story, didnt seem like I did anything and yet the game is very long or at least it takes a long time to get stuff done. The story was also pretty poor compared to the first one which had some nice twists on classic fairly tale stuff.

And whoever thought that drain the boss mission was fun should be shot. Fucking took forever needlessly.

Ultimately it had the charm but fucking hell, it pissed me off a lot more than it entertained me.

I played for around an hour and had a ton of stuff to be able to forge. like enough that I could scroll the weapons. Personally I thought the personalization of the old tower was tacked on in the first game, and I didnt care at all about it.

I agree when you are offtrack, the overlord is too slow, painfully so. Adding jump would do nothing in the game, becuase there is no obsticle in the first place to jump over. I originaly thought of this but then realized that jump really wouldnt do anything, and is masking the problem of slow travel. yeah you could jump off a cliff here and land on a house roof there, but that would literaly be the usefullness of it.

I didn't mind the speed that the overlord moved at. I will give you it had me pretty angry at times when I couldn't figure out what to do but that was the only problem I really had with it.

I found three of the forge stones really without trying to, just running into them while doing the story.

The speed he moved at wouldnt be a problem if backtracking and crossing large areas to figure out what to do weren't the order of the day. He doesn't necessarily need to jump, just be able to fall off obvious low walls.

Plus I never felt like I was building an empire or even had a reasont o really hunt down the main villain, I mean theres only two places to conquer and to conquer them takes more effort than its worth. Im still 2 short in Nordberg, cant find them, am done slow running around to find them.

Check the doors on houses, even if you've opened them all the last time, any villagers who came from said houses will go back inside and fix the door.

...and backtracking at the Overlord's slow pace is only really as bad as it was in the first one, it's just that now there are more areas to comb over looking for Health, Mana, and Minion upgrades, along with now dark magic crystals.

Actually, I think its not as bad as long as there's a Netherworld gate on the map. I'm just constantly out of gold and I barely did any of the tower decorations -_-

Also, I found a faq online that details most of the dark crystal and upgrade locations: http://faqs.ign.com/articles/997/997045p1.html

Easiest way to get gold is this: Port to Nordberg Town Gate 2, have minions open chests. Port to Everlight Temple, walk up the stairs to open the door to the "secret" room, enter secret room, loot. Rinse repeat. You'll make about 1200-1500 per trip.

Got the 50k gold achievement in no time flat. Any other method is going to be agonizing tedium incarnate.

ffffffuck that spider wall bit after the spider queen fight

the third time I just gave up and saved the game to come back to later

turns out it thinks I haven't beaten the queen yet. FFFFFFFFF

Playing it on the 360. And there is no sensitivity option.
