What to upgrade to solve lag?

ghost_master2000ghost_master2000 Registered User regular
ok, so I got warhammer recently and it runs alright but in the large battles it bogs down to a pretty terrible, almost unplayable frame rate. I'm trying to figure out what needs to be upgraded to solve that. I'm pretty sure it's the processor or the video card, but I've been out of the loop for a while on what does what for gaming.

here are my current specs:

Processor: Intel Pentium D 920 dual core 3.00 GHz (not sure if the fact that it's a pentium D makes it not that great or not)
Here are some specs I found on it

Video Card: ATI all-in-wonder Radeon 9800 Pro (yes pretty old which is why I suspect it)

RAM: 2 GB DDR2

MOBO: ASUS P5VDC-X (user manual with specs PDF)

Also about 50% of the time I get a BSOD when I quit or alt+tab out of warhammer, windows says it's a device or driver error. Is there any way I can figure out what's causing it more specifically?

Lots of people have BSOD issues with alt-tabbing; i expect that will get solved with software or driver upgrades. The 9800 Pro is like 6 years old, right? An 8800 GT or its ATI equivalent will do just fine. You can spend more if you want to, though. The specs says your mobo comes with a PCI-E slot. If so, upgrading should be pretty easy.

    What is your budget?

get an nvidia 8800 series for a great budget card.

or, I recommend an ati 4870 for $279.

yeah it's got a PCI-E x16 slot but it says "max x4 mode" meaning it wouldn't be able run at full speed? would that limit performance?

trying to keep the price under $200

edit: also, are we SURE it's the video card?

Anything above an 8800gt will be so bottlenecked by his processor its extremely unlikely he'd notice a difference between it and an 8800 anyway.
Picking up an 8800GT or maybe 512 GTS is his best bet, and as an added bonus well under 150$

Though I'm personally a fan of getting the best thing you can with your budget. It may be bottlenecked now, but a year down the road he may upgrade his processor and end up automatically gaining more performance from his video card.

Also means he won't have to upgrade the VC as soon.

ok so the video card sounds like the plan, but will it's performance be severely limited by the 4x mode limit of the mobo?

yes but it will still be light years ahead of what you have know. Also, double check your bios to make sure it can't be set higher.

Also: the GeForce 9800GT is the exact same part as the GeForce 8800GT so if you see a better deal on it then you should pick it up.

great I was worried that the x4 PCIe would only be as good as the 8x AGP. I was able to pick up an 8800 GT for $111 shipped from newegg. It'll be my first Nvidia card, I've only ever had voodoo and ATI, so hopefully my first nvidia does me right.

well I got the card and put it in and the comp would turn on but nothing would be displayed on screen. i assumed the card was not compatible in x4 mode and ordered another motherboard to transplant everything into.

As far as I know, the bandwidth of AGP 8x wasn't actually exceeded by any card. Industry just decided to switch to another format.
