That's a common misconception with steam. The linking of CDkeys is for Valve games only. It sucks, but that's just the way it is.

What kind of error are you getting? You can always go hunt the .exe down in the Browse option of the non-steam games list if it isn't popping up for you. You shouldn't really be getting any kind of problem, because all it's doing is adding a shortcut to your Games list.

Man, this is frustrating. I start the game and it's fullscreen.

    I click Options. It says:
    Render: Static lighting
    Quality settings: medium
    Resolution: 1024x768
    Full Screen: yes

I change things to not full screen, quality maximum, resolution 1024x768, render from static lighting to Full Dynamic Lighting. When I hit Full Dynamic Lighting I get a popup saying "Changes will take effect only after game restart." I click OK, then Use (as opposed to Advanced or Cancel), then Quit to Windows. I launch the game again and none of these settings -- neither the one that requires a restart nor the ones that don't -- have changed. It's back to fullscreen, 1024x768, medium quality, etc. X__X

I assume it's the latest patch, as I'm running the game from Steam and I've told Steam to keep the game files current. I'll download and apply a patch if we believe Steam won't automatically apply the patch you're talking about.

Apparently my problem isn't a game bug but rather some sort of filesystem permission or directory structure problem, as the game seems unable to write ANY persistent data to the hard disk. Settings are only part of the problem: when I save a game and then immediately select 'load game' and look for games, my saved game does not appear there.

I'll dig deeper and see what I can figure out.

I think I had the same error. A work directory issue. Never bothered with it and just launched it outside of Steam.

OK, I found my problem. This piece of crap "Gateway" laptop made by Asus had some silly filesystem junctions added. Stalker was looking for 'c:\documents and settings\all users\documents\stalker-shoc\savedgames\' and reporting no such file or directory. My Vista 64-bit installation had a junction called Documents and Settings in the root of the C drive, but it was targeted at T:\Users, not C:\Users. I have no T drive. I grabbed MS SysInternals junction.exe and deleted/recreated about 10 junctions in various places in the filesystem, and am not yet sure I've wiped out all references to T:\.

Oh well. At least I can save games now.

Blowouts in the Red Forest can go straight to hell.

I start out on the stint to shut down the psi emitters. I've got plenty of supplies and work through all the baddies and mutants in the Red Forest area without too much difficulty. Shoot my way in and out of the psi emitter lab without even running out of shotgun shells (though I came close). I get outside and it's pitch black. Deciding that there's no hurry, I decide to take a nap in the tunnel that leads underground.

    Big mistake.

I fall asleep and a couple hours later a blowout hits. Me and a bunch of loners that showed up out of nowhere just wait it out. I take a peek outside and things go straight to hell. Within five minutes, I fight (in no particular order): blind dogs, pseudo dogs, chernobyl dogs plus ghost dogs, poltergeists, 5 bloodsuckers at the same time, 3 dwarves, a controller, and a partridge in a pear tree. In that short time I expended almost as much rifle ammo as I did during the entire trek through the Red Forest and going in/coming out of the lab and even more M209 grenades. I wisely decide to forego any more fighting (and still manage to run into another bloodsucker on the way out!) and just sprint through the entire Red Forest at night. On the way I encounter a horde of more than a dozen zombied Stalkers (!) but decided to just ignore them.

The only upside to the whole event was that what appeared to be every surviving Monolith soldier in the entire base tried to cram into a single cargo container to take shelter from the blowout. Too bad for them it provided no protection whatsoever, but lucky for me since I had a hearty laugh at coming upon almost a dozen dead Monolith soldiers all piled together.

Hate the Red Forest so much.

Dwarves (Dwarfs?) are really the only part of OL that I don't like. They seem to just stand there, absorb bullets, and push me in odd directions.

That and the WOooOoooOOSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHH sound Controllers make whenever one of them's nearby.

As long as I have the drop on them, dwarves don't bother me that much. I carry enough M209s that I can usually kill them within seconds if they are turned away from me and not worry much about burning a few grenades. However, even a single dwarf that's paying attention is just a bullet-sponge. The window between attacks is so short that you pretty much just end up chipping away at them and it's just boring.

I'd have to say the dwarves and cats are my least favorite additions in OL. The dwarves just move around too fast for being able to deflect basically any damage while using their telekinetic attack. The cats are annoying because they have far too much health, have a longer melee range than dogs, and pretty much always make you bleed early in the game. What you end up with a is something you can't back away from and shoot at, takes far too many bullets (even if you stand still to shoot them), and cause more damage though bleeding than actually attacking. Fortunately, outside of the Cordon they are almost nonexistent and even dwarves are pretty rare everywhere you go.

Most of the time I just ignore dwarves entirely until I find a convenient time to kill them. I had one dwarf right at the beginning of the Army Warehouses area that stayed alive for several real-time hours just because he was never in my way coming or going. It was only when I happened to come across him while in possession of a grenade surplus that I decided to finally get rid of him.

I've been playing the (original) game with object dynamic lighting and the framerate has been fine. For some reason, now after coming back from the Agroprom research facility, I'm getting horrible framerates in the Garbage. Like it'll be fine for a minute, then I'll get 1-2 fps for about 30 seconds. Zooming in with a scope makes the framerate clear up, but that's not really practical.

Is it just me, or does this not seem like that much of a fight? Then again, I've never seen a partridge from the Zone. Or a pear tree, for that matter. The pear tree is the threat here, isn't it? Bet it has bark like a cheese grater, shuriken leaves, and a heart as black as the Monolith itself. And the partridge binds its cold, dark, undying soul to the mortal realm for its own dark ends.

...Alright, you have my respect, sir.

Yeah I've got most of the cordon. Got the two northern outposts, the bridge, the campfire way off to the right of the map on the north side of the bridge, and the machine yard. (AKA the place you save nimble in the first game)

I've also usually got the stalker base, but the bandits garrisoned there have an irritating habit of leaving randomly, which causes the stalkers to respawn.

Still, all my bandits are like bullet-tooth tony now or something.

I can't get my bandits to take the North-East outpost right next to the stalker base. They grabbed the north-most one about five minutes after I cleared it, but won't budge with the other. The stalker base past the bridge has been empty for some time, and I keep clearing out any poor bastard that spawns.

And then get it patched, but then stack a bunch of mods on it. I'm using the OL mod plus the Stolls pack, got some kickass weapons, tons of grenades, ludicrously great artifacts (the addition of altering artifacts in OL was a brilliant idea), and just fought through pretty much every soldier in the Zone.

Five seconds into the lest section of the game, unavoidable crash. Reload. Recrash. Every time.

I don't even think the fault belongs to the mods. I think it's just the buggy game engine because the error is some engine script thing that makes no sense.

I assume you mean north west right? Just go back to the garbage, wait for a few squads to launch, and follow them as they head into the cordon. Squads seem to move slower in zones you are not in.

I think that applies to most creatures. The fleshy thin-skinned ones go down with shotguns, and the armor-wearing humanoids need some AP rifle fire (preferably to the head!).

I carried a rifle, shotgun, and handgun. I never used the handgun, but the shotgun was nice if I got stuck with up-close stuff or had to fight some mutants.

While you can probably get by without carrying a shotgun (I did until I found a chaser 13), it makes mutant confrontations quite a bit easier. They were pretty cheap to upgrade also IIRC. I carried a spas12 (or whatever the highend one was) with 100~ rounds of buckshot throughout the entire game. I'm pretty sure I did all of agropom underground with it exclusively (the bandits were just too close ranged to resist)

Just make sure you don't get the mod that takes away their ability to use shot, the only real reason you would want to do this is if you wanted to use it as a primary anti-personal weapon.

There's lots of shotgun ammo around. I carry it around to kill dogs/boars so I don't have to waste more expensive ammo on them. It would be nice if they were more useful against snorks but when they get close they're too low to really hit effectively. It takes an entire magazine of slugs to kill any human with armor. The nice part is they get stunned for the entire time. Its good for storming a building if you can ensure you only fight one guy at a time and have time to reload.
