I put up a listing this afternoon on eBay for a piece of camera equipment and when I got home tonight I had an email in my inbox supposedly from PayPal with the subject "NOTICE OF PAYMENT RECEIVED - PLEASE SHIP ITEM" which immediately set off alarms in my head because I've never seen anything like that from them and why the hell would PayPal ask me to "PLEASE" ship the item? Then I logged into PayPal (by typing it into my address bar, I didn't click on any links in the email) and found that several hundred dollars (the amount I listed for the 'buy it now' price) had been sent to my account then subsequently reversed. It doesn't say why the funds were reversed. I got a message from the person listed on the PayPal email saying "I paid $320 for this item, please return the amount". My item is still happily receiving bids on eBay.
I sent the email to spoof@paypal.com. Should I also report this person to eBay? Should I worry about anything else?
It's good that you sent the scam email to their security team. If you opened it, you might have something lurking on your computer, so give it a scan ASAP with a good antiviral/antispyware programs. If the scan comes up clean, change your eBay and Paypal passwords.
