So this is a thread where dudes can post some bands that is local to them and (hopefully) good music. I'm from Iceland so I'll post some Icelandic bands.

Let's get rid of all the obvious crap. Sigur Rós are great and Björk too sometimes.

Brain Police - They are a pretty good stoner rock band.

Trabant - Are great if you're looking for electronic sexymusic that is only about making love.

Quarashi - Maybe some have heard of them, they were in some video game and some movie trailers or something a few years back, they were (band split up) a rap, some rock, band. Pretty good.

Retro Stefson - It's a rising band in Iceland, they sound like some sort of Indie, Soul, Latin something. I am watching these guys closely.

Now you guys share!

Maine is pretty deprived of good local music, seeing as it's mostly made up of trees, rednecks, and moose. I've met one that I can think of, Rustic Overtones, which is a kind of rock/soul/ska thing going on. Very catchy stuff. Rustic Overtones Myspace thingie

I'm pretty sure there isn't like a single famous human musician to ever come out of Connecticut. I think Hatebreed might have started here, that's about it.

Oh, and Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional) was born here. D:

There's Fashion Bomb who are pretty fucking terrible in general. They're opening for TKK this weekend though, so they popped into my mind.

    Project .44

Those are a few of the smaller industrial acts from around here.

So is the use of horns the only thing that make them a "ska" band? The only song that actually shows any influence of true ska music is Sweet Tomorrow on that page and even then as soon as they get into the chorus all that goes out the window. Jesus Christ I fucking hate what modern music has done to ska.

That's true. Actually the ska band I recently found that I've been listening to the most lately is Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. Not only are they awesome ska, but their broken English makes everything so hilarious.

As for recent stuff? There's this guy, I lived about ten minutes from him for a while. Eric Church

This little jukebox thingy has a couple of his songs on it, I particularly like Sinners Like Me. It's the third one. Songs you won't like. Oh, I should mention that it's country before you guys waste time clicking those links.

How do I feel about the Specials?! Basically I feel like, after original ska spawned reggae and rocksteady, it was pushed to the back of the bus until the Specials came along, revolutionized the sound and started what is known in Ska History as The Two-Tone Revolution, giving to us many many awesome ska bands like The Toasters, Bim Skala Bim, The Slackers, etc. etc. Basically, I love the Specials.

We have/had a couple really good local bands here in Buffalo.

One was The Jazzabelles. They were kind of a soft-rock/alternative group. I actually met them once. They were very nice ladies. They only made two albums. I feel stupid for not remembering the name of the first one. I think it was called Café All Day, and the second one was called Skyway. Eventually, one got married, and music became sparser, and then the other one got married, and they dropped the band altogether.

There was also Kilbrannan. They made two CDs as well. One was called Bedlam Boys and the other was Live at O'Lacy's. Sailor songs, folk songs, drinking songs. Acoustic and rock-ish. The band split several years ago into the following two:

Stone Row. It's folk music, only with a friggin' electric guitar. I've only heard a little bit of their music, but it's pretty rad.

And my most favoritest band of all from Buffalo: Penny Whiskey. Sailor songs, folk songs, drinking songs. All acoustic, except for the electric bass. Have you ever heard an Irish jig played at top speed on an electric bass? No? Well that makes you stupid. If you want to hear an Irish jig played at top speed on and electric bass, go buy Size Doesn't Matter. While you're at it, buy Half Corked.

Edit: Beavo, Great Big Sea is one of the best bands out there.<3

As far as local music goes for me, a few bands have come from my town. Some names of bands are Death Cab For Cutie, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Screaming Trees, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Marcy Playground. I don't know, you may have heard of them.

I'm probably a terrible source for Austin bands, but Spoon is pretty amazing, Ghostland Observatory is awesome if you can get past the singer's voice.

I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness is not only the best band name ever, but has a very nice um, ever so slightly goth rock sound.

The Toadies are from Dallas, and so is Course of Empire(who are no longer together), but both have some awesome music.

Dude Aaron's voice is incredible. Admittedly it didn't sound the greatest on their earlier albums, but he sounds fucking awesome on the latest one. I love that band to death and I'm seeing them again in Portland on the 18th. I can't wait. Last time I saw them, he reached into the crowd and held my hand on 5 different occasions and I could have just died.
