Grabbing a domain

So, there's this domain that I want to register. Problem is, someone owns it. But the domain expired at the end of August and the owner has not renewed it. It's currently in the "Redeption Period" which from a bit of research sounds like it lasts 30 days, then a 5 day downtime, then any one can register the domain. What's my best bet for registering this domain successfully? And is this process correct? It isn't necessarily a "well-known" domain, but I could have some competition. Thanks guys.

Most big-name registrars offer a "backorder" service, which is more or less the domain version of hiring an eBay sniper; the minute the domain becomes available, they immediately fire a registration request at it (and hope nobody else did so first). It's around $20 through GoDaddy, but if the domain is important to you (and you think other people will be trying to beat you to it), try to backorder it through a few different registrars to boost your chances of getting the first shot fired.
