so im in desperate need to save some money, so i figured i could have some lonely time with my trusty ps2 for the next few weeks, but im undecided what to get.
games i have or played:
Okami
All Final Fantasy
Odin Sphere
Dragon Quest
Kingdom Hearts
SMT:Noctourne
Breath of Fire
Dark Cloud 1&2
im looking into Rogue Galaxy or maybe Persona 3, but does anyone else have any other recommendations or good / bad things to say about either of them? im on the fence about a strategy RPG like Disagea because i hear that you can lose lifetimes to that game, but im usually not too good at them.
im mainly looking for an RPG because they are generally the most time consuming, but if people recommend another game that has alot to keep me busy i would definately consider it
Seeing as you've played Nocturne, I'd strongly recommend the other Shin Megami Tensei games, such as the Digital Devil Sagas or Persona 3. Best RPGs out there at all, never mind just on the PS2.
The Shadow Hearts trilogy is also fairly likeable.
Not played Rogue Galaxy, but I seem to recall a consensus that it was kind of bland.
Suikoden 5 might be worth a shot, if you can find a cheap copy.
If you want a slightly different srpg try something like Gladius. Disgaea 1 is worth a playthrough just to have tried it, you don't have to get too involved in all the crazy extra stuff.
EDIT: In the srpg vein, I really liked Stella Deus: Gates of Eternity, but it might not appeal to everyone.
I think the first two Shadow Hearts games have some minor continuity, but nothing to worry about, and the third game is more standalone? I played the second and didn't have any problems following the story despite not having played the first.
if you really dont want to check out Disgaea 1 or 2 (note: you should check out Disgaea if you want something to kill time. also becase they are awesome.) then i'll recommend Atelier Iris. i loved that game. straightforward, charming, great sprite graphics. felt like a long lost SNES rpg reanimated on the ps2.
Rogue Galaxy is one of my favourite RPGs of all time. The weapon combination system is enough to keep you playing for ages (70+ hours on my save) to get the best weapons the game has to offer, and I really like the action combat.
It feels like a friendlier version of FFXII in terms of characters and game play, I guess. But with Abyss' battle system thrown in for funsies.
Well, Shadow Hearts has already been mentioned, but I'm gonna say it again. They are definitely worth it, especially the second (you don't really have to play the first one, but naturally, the second spoils quite something of the story). And the third simply has the most awesome battle system around.
And Digital Devil Saga, yes. The catch is, you absolutely HAVE to play both of 'em.

now do you? ive been playing the first one, i kind of like the difficulty, but everythign else was extremly boring, with no characters and barely any plot. so far i havent gotten myself to finish it even though i got the second one waiting to be started...

Get Persona 3! It's really everything you could want from an RPG.
It's gorgeous, it's challenging, it's massive, it has a great story and characters, and it has one of the best macro-strategy elements I've ever seen: planning your every day life to keep yourself rested, your marks up, and your social life going. Choosing how to live the main character's life, who to make friends with, etc. does wonders for putting you in the main character's shoes (it's one of those rare games where you feel like you are the main character), and seeing everyone in the context of their regular lives as well as their world-saving lives allows for a lot of character development.
Also it has a set of truly ridiculous optional bosses that will make you feel like a badass if you ever defeat them.
I was going to recommend DQ8 or Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter since those are both excellent RPGs that are also very cheap, but it looks like you've already played both of them.
Go with Persona 3: FES. It's very high quality, it's only $30 new, and it's also much longer than most RPGs (you could easily spend 100 hours if you want to see everything the game has to offer).
I strongly recommend Final Fantasy XII, it's not the most epic nor does it have the best story, but I think SquareEnix played its card safe, deciding not to do anything radically different.
Except for one thing, its battle system. Which I must say is fantastic.
right so i was going to dig at Persona 3, but it seems like FES is out in a couple of weeks so i might just wait for that. in the meantime i am going to the local brick and mortar store to try and find some of these gems
I'm gonna go with something non-rpg, but will let you definately invest heaps of time
If your in any way interested in cars or racing grab Gran Turismo, you'll spend ages on the licensing tests and finishing all the races. It almost becomes trance like as you start shaving tenth's of a second off your lap times. but yea GT4 has huge amounts of crap to do (and that's before you get to the endurance races)

As for as Rogue Galaxy goes, I'll put it this way.
If you're playing it for plot or anything like that, I wouldn't bother.
If you like customizing a lot of shit(IE if you've enjoyed a Level 5 game up until this point) go ahead and get it.
Not to mention it only costs like 10-15 dollars these days. Be careful though, since it's dual-layered it doesn't play on some PS2s.
I will also put in another vote for .//Hack G.U. but only if you're going to buy the entire trilogy.
As for Disgaea...I never cared for it myself. I think those type of RPGs are for people who like big numbers. Which isn't a bad thing, just not my type of game.
Just remember to save and save often in Persona 3. Every battle, even with gimpy little slimes that you've been fighting for the last three hours has about a 1-2% chance of something going catastrophically and immediately wrong and since if the main character dies, it's an immediate game over... you will be bullshit gibbed at least five times or so even if you play perfectly. It's just a fact of life with the Persona series.
I like the Atelier games a lot too, though I came to them at kind of an odd angle and it's a bit hard to move backwards. Iris 3 is a really solid game though, at least until you pick up all the blades and figure out how to manipulate enemy turns to make it so they get one to your thirty. Khemia is also pretty fun, though the story's pretty lacking in comparison to the rest of the series.
Oh, and buy Silmeria, you bastard. Only RPG on the system where you can dismember your enemies and watch them flop helplessly on the ground.
Kya: Dark Lineage (Platformer, not an RPG. Still fun)
Growlanser: Generations
Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria
Shadow of the Colossus (Also a platformer. Even more fun)
Hunter: the Reckoning: Wayward
The Wild ARMs games(on the PS2 there's 3, 4, 5, and Alter Code F, which is a remake of the first, as well as 1 and 2 from the PS1). My personal favourites of the PS2 ones are 3 and 5.
There's also Tales of the Abyss(and also Tales of Legendia, but Abyss is way better).
And I second the recommendations for the Atelier Iris style games. Incredibly easy, but charming.
I'm going to have to put in a very strong plug for the Xenosaga series. Ep. 2 can be kind of hard to get through if you don't get the hang of the battle system, but Ep. 3 is so excellent that it makes up for any shortfalls of 1 and 2.
What's the general consensus on Radiata Stories and Grandia III? They both got kind of "meh" reviews, but for a JRPG that doesn't really tell me much. I never played Grandia I, loved Grandia II, hated Xtreme. And Radiatia Stories just looks so good.

Grandia III:
Great Gameplay(best of the grandia series, IMO)
Horrible...horrible plot/characters...just so horrible. I think that Penny Arcade strip from a while ago summed it up pretty well. It's like they took every JRPG character stereotype and pushed them to 11. I still beat it because I liked the battle system, but goodness if I didn't mute almost every cutscene in the game.
As for Radiata stones...haven't really gotten far enough yet but liking it enough so far.
I recommended SotC for it's engaging gameplay and success at putting you in the point of view of the protagonist. Role Playing can mean more than just numbers on a character sheet.
As for Radiata Stories, I haven't been able to get into it. Nothing truly objectionable that I've seen, just... dull.
Persona 3 is the only RPG I have ever played in which I cared what a given character was doing or saying at any given time. It is one of the best RPGs I have ever played, and definitely the best Japanese one, bar none.
All Suikodens. 5 would be easiest/cheapest to get, and its also the second best. 2 is a ps1 game and expensive, but it's amazing, my favorite game of all time. Don't start with 4, it kinda sucked, 1 and 3 were good too, so try em if you like 5. Also Xenosaga 2 and 3 suck, just play 1.
Shadow Hearts Covenant and From the New World are good as well.

Grandia III has already been summed up quite well, but to reiterate: The battle system is great. Launching enemies into the air and juggling them so that they never get their turn is awesome. Everything else is incredibly generic. (I didn't finish it because of this, but may go back one day. I'd still recommend it if you can find it cheap.)
But Radiata Stories?
I love Radiata Stories. It is not an incredible game. It does a lot of things wrong. But the things it does right make it wonderful.
There are a bunch of elements in the game that have been done before, but are still uncommon enough to make the game offer a unique experience. There are a lot of characters. (Over one hundred, I think.) To recruit most of them, you will have to figure out their schedule, and do favors for them. Of course, this can only happen at certain times, because the game uses an internal day/night system. While most of the characters don't really have any story significance, the work that goes into recruiting them makes you damn proud of your team.
The battle system is pretty simple. There are 4 weapon types that all play differently, attacking builds up points that can be used for special attacks, you can issue commands to your allies, etc. It's not too complex, but is still fun.
But where the game really shines is in personality. The graphics aren't high tech or anything, but the characters are strangely adorable, and seeing them wielding giant two-handed swords is a thing to behold. (Lots of games do this, of course, but there is just something about how it's done here.) Changing armor changes your appearance, but it is just "armor", not "helmet", "body", etc. This means that your outfit won't look horrible. (Most of the time! This is one of my biggest pet peeves for games in which armor changes your appearance.)
The music is also incredible. It is overwhelmingly fun and upbeat. My favorite part is when you wake up, and no music is playing. Then, you exit your house, and you are assaulted with the Warrior's Theme, in all its brassy glory. I wish I could wake up like that every day.
Of course, the game has some faults. It seems to have an identity crisis: sometimes, it take itself way too seriously, breaking the light-hearted tone. The whole world is made up of the FFX-style "lines", which, unless you are crazy like me, and enjoy that, can hurt the feeling of exploration.

Second follows from first, third's standalone.
First has the best story, third has the best gameplay, second is half-and-half.
They're basically the best PS2 RPGs that don't have Shin megami tensei in the title.
Legend of the Dragoon
Parasite Eve 1
Xenogears
People didn't like Legend of the Dragoon, I contend it's one of the best RPGs I've ever played.
i mean look at this giant slime.
