Computer won't boot from CD

My friends computer got a virus, not it will not even boot from CD. It won't load whatever is on the cd drive. It gets a disk read error. This is all I know about it right now, what can he do to fix it? He can boot in safe mode but he does not want to format because he doesn't have another cd key to use for windows, or his cd doesn't work...one of the two.

USB drive? I'm pretty sure you can boot from them now.

To fix it, run a virus scan and find out what your dealing with, then find instructions on manual removal. If you're lucky, there'll be a removal tool somewhere, but I doubt it.

you may need to change the boot order in the Bios so that it boots from CD before trying to boot from the harddrive.
