Quick Question: How can I tell if a PS3 is PS2 BC compatible?
I'm planning on going to a Gamecrazy soon to trade in my 360 for a PS3, and maybe I will trade in my PS2 as well if I can find a used backwards compatible PS3 there.
How can I tell if its BC without plugging it in and trying it? I heard there might be a difference in ports or something.
Thanks guysssssss.

If it has chrome trim and flash card readers in the front, it's either a 60 or 80gb that is BC.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

This seems like a good place to ask; I picked up the 80GB model a few days ago and forgot to check if it had BC. You can guess the look on my face when I tried popping in Shadow of the Colossus. I understand the issue is related to a few pieces they took out of the hardware between SKU releases; is there any chance they'll be adding software BC somewhere down the line?
I know how futile a question like that is, by the way.

Yeah, the PS2's main piece of hardware, the emotion engine, was taken out for cost cutting.
Supposedly the 80 gig has software compatibility already, and Shadow of the Colossus is supposed to work fine, so I'm not sure why you're having problems, unless maybe you haven't updated the firmware yet.
Actually, it also looks like the software BC isn't working for people that are outside NTSC.

I'd say there is a decent chance but it may be a ways in the future. The ps2 was a complicated beast which means it will be difficult, and could be spotty. But it seems that selling ps2 games via psn would make it worth it to Sony.
Edit: The new 80Gig is the same hardware as the 40gig but with a bigger hard drive. So, no BC.

The hard drives are now 80gigs standard. Sony is pushing DLC and it's cheaper for them to only buy 80gig hard drives in bulk.
When you buy a PS3 you have to know the bundle that has PS2 BC or read the side of the box where it will say Not PS2 compatible if isn't PS2 compatible. The current North American bundle that has PS2 BC is the MGS4 bundle.

Also, 4 USB ports.

I still laughed, though.
If I had my ps2 around I'd trade it in for a xbox 360 in a second. (Already have ps3, gave brother-in-law ps2 so he could play rock band on it.)
You use Windows don't you. Microsoft obviously heard of your plan to sell the 360 and cracked it deliberately. The monitor every pc you know....
EDIT: Oh crap, I think maybe that restriction is on new systems only... I don't think it applies to used.
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....

Man that stinks, Soc actually plays better on the PS3 than it did on the PS2.
