Drinking while sick - thoughts?

edited October 2008 in Help / Advice Forum
This seems like the designated bawwww forum, so I'll go ahead and elaborate: I think I'm finally, finally getting over someone that's been keeping me awake at night for ages now.
Well, two and a half years, anyway.

It's nice, finally not feeling like I want to hang myself. I'd like to celebrate by getting drunk and playing some Fallout. Trouble is, I've got a cold. I'm not nauseated, nor am I having any stomach/diarrhea problems or anything like that. Just lots of snot and, as of earlier tonight, a little extra difficulty breathing and some painful coughing.

Chances are, I'm getting drunk whether or not I should... I'm just wondering how often other people do this and what their experiences with it have been.

I made this same thread a few months back. The overall consensus was DO NOT drink.

It will only make it worse, and can actually prolong your cold. Get drunk when you're 100% better.

To be honest, you have piqued my interest...spill the beans. :P

Hmmm. getting pissed while you're sick. Not a good idea. You'll probably feel fine when you're drunk, but the next day, "oh god!"Are you heading out to pubs/clubs or actually just staying in playing Fallout? I'd have fun playing Fallout with a few drinks (not getting tanked), then go out and get smashed next time! But hey, ppl get smashed when they're sick all the time. Go nuts!

Getting drunk while sick is definitely not a good idea for a myriad of reasons. Having one or two drinks is acceptable. I often have some warm whiskey with honey when my throat feels sore. Getting hosed, on the other hand, will only make you feel much worse.

Thanks for the comments, folks. I probably should have searched, heh.

I guess I'll put off the drinking, if for no other reason than because I thought it was Saturday night, not Sunday. :(

Oh well. I'm a little dehydrated anyway... my lips are all cracked and bleeding and shit. Hm, I should probably go hydrate myself a bit. With hamburgers and Mountain Dew, and then Fallout. Sounds like a plan.

To be honest, you have piqued my interest...spill the beans.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. About the girl I'm basically over? Typical story.

    Update: The hamburgers sucked. Goddammit.

Guess I'll peruse that other thread about drinking + colds further. Move along, nothing more to see here.

Jaeger can cure cancer*, and will work wonders for the common cold. Get shitfaced.

    *
WARNING: Does not actually cure cancer. Also, probably not awesome for colds.

BWTF, if you're going to feel crappy for the next two days anyways, why not add a hangover to the mix and get all your shittiness out of the way at the same time. It's efficient, possibly retarded, and smacks of self-destruction. What better way to celebrate not feeling as bad as you use too then by making yourself feel way the fuck worse? That's progress!* Woooo!

    *
WARNING: May not actually be progress. But I feel for you, so you go do whatever you want. :P

Yeah, all the "don't drink" folks got it right.

And dude, if you've got a cold, ffs, drink water. A lot. And if your schedule allows, just sleep off the cold. I grab as much sleep as I can whenever I'm sick, and it does wonders.
I gotta admit that Fallout does make a strong case for not sleeping, though. :winky:

And even if the idea of drinking screwdrivers (orange juice + vodka) sounds like a great way to kill a cold, it isn't.

You'd think the vitamin C from the OJ would help, and the alcohol from the vodka would kill whatever is left, but really, it's a bad idea. You will feel extremely terrible the next day. Trust me.

The only way I would vote "yes" on this is if you are going to an absolutely bitching party that cannot be missed.

It does not sound like the case so I suggest no.

Be careful about dehydrating yourself, and don't mix alcohol with cold medicine. Not only will you still be sick, but you'll also have one mofo of a hangover.

Im not a doctor and this might be bad advice from a medical stand point. Again I dont know im no doctor.

But i pretty regularly go out and get wasted with a cold. I am not allowed to self medicate (read take over the counter medicine) so on the weekends if i am getting a cold my options are to sit inside and be miserable because I can't take medicine and the flight doc is off till monday. Or go out anyway and get smashed.

I tend to go out and get blitzed and I have rarely noticed any bad side effects other than still being sick and then drunk. Makes the hang overs kind of miserable.

I am going to have to disagree with the gentlemen here. Lets just follow simple logic.

    Booze is made of Alcohol.
    Alcohol is a disinfectant.
Booze travels through the blood. Hence your BAC (Blood-Alcohol Content).
Diseases are in your bloods, making you sick.

Therefore, Booze will disinfect your blood and get you better. Party down man.

    Guys, guys.

I already said I'm not gonna.

Maybe next weekend, when I don't have to drive five hours after getting shitfaced. Hopefully by then I'll also not be sick anymore.

Even if it worked that way, it would also mean that it's destroying my antibodies. Plus alcohol retards kidney and liver function if you're drinking enough to get fucked up, which was the original idea... so I'm not trying to find out if it's bad for me. Just looking for anecdotal "evidence," experiences from people who actually do it, etc.

Beer may be a bit better, what with it having either antibiotic or antibacterial (I can't remember which) properties, added to the fact that it doesn't hit you fast enough to shut down your kidneys unless you're shotgunning. Damn shame I don't have any beer and hate the way it tastes, generally speaking.

Oh well. Come Friday I'm going to teach my liver a proper lesson with some Vodka. If I'm still sick by then, I'll update this thread with how it went.

meh, you're going to feel like ass for the next few days anyway... so why not add a hangover to the mix?

I was way sick this weekend, and still am. Needless to say, I woke up Sunday morning and my kidney literally hurt from drinking so much, but I don't believe the alcohol affected my sickness at all, if anything it helped me out at night.

If you're drinking enough to pass out and/or get sick, also beware that being sick may increase your risk of blocking your airways with vomit, since your nose may no longer work correctly. Also if you're weak from sickness, your tolerance for alcohol may be lower than you're used to (since your organs are busy doing other things and are not quite as efficient at processing the alcohol). So just be careful.

Just have to throw my hat into the ring. About a month ago, I had a sore throat and a couple sneezes one morning, but I was invited to a party that night. I decided to ignore my symptoms and partied with my buddies, and proceeded to have a cold that hung on for two fucking weeks.

So yeah, I'd recommend sticking with orange juice (and that means without vodka) if you want to drink anything.

See, now that is just silly. If you are going to remove all your blood you want to boil it first (To remove all the diseases) and then put it back. Good as new. This is the same reason your body gives you a fever when you are sick, it is trying to boil your blood and kill the disease.
