Vista vs XP - Networking

Help me H/A/

My Uncle recently bought a Vista Laptop, and set up a wireless network.
I'm having trouble getting the Vista Laptop to see the XP Desktop to share files. I've been to the MS website and downloaded a 'protocol' that was supposed to fix things, and also a "Hotfix" didnt seem to work (the supplied password never worked).

I'm used to using the network wizard with XP, and doing this enables the Desktop to see the Vista machine. Is there something I'm not doing with the Vista laptop?

If anyone can help or point me to a resource - that would be great.

Hmm I actually find Vista the easiest to network, first of make sure they are in the same Workgroup otherwise they wont see each other, next, make sure that on the Vista machine you have "Network discovery" and all that junk turned on in the Network and sharing center.

Lastly, you probably have already done this... maybe... but since Local security policy claims presendence over LAN policy you have to make sure, this is where things might get confusing, on both pc's put full permissions to the everyone group on Sharing permissions tab, and on the Security tab (if you cant see it go to Tools-Folder options-then view and l think somewhere in there there will be a line about showing advanced security options or somethign similar) select the security options you would like in place (read, read write)

If this doesnt work I'll try and think of somethign else :S

You could try this, goto the Network and Sharing Center (right-click Network on the desktop and select Properties). For the connected network click Customize and change the Location Type to Private. This should enable Network Discovery and File Sharing. You should now be able to access shares via UNC pathname (e.g. \\computername\c$).
