League of Legends is a competitive online game set in an imaginative world. Gamers take the role of a powerful Summoner, calling forth and controlling brave Champions in battle. League of Legends combines the best elements of session-based games with persistent elements of MMORPG's. Enter the Fields of Justice with your most trusted allies as you fight for your right to rule the world of Valoran. There is only one rule of law among those in the league: Winner rules all.

League of Legends is the first game of Riot Games. Riot Games is founded by Steve Feek. Steve Feek... is Guinsoo. If you're familiar with DotA, this news should already have you wet. Rumors about Guinsoo extend as far that, as I have heard, he's a Russian hacker who got busted and jailed, and that's why he had to pass his project on.

Now, if you happen to know and remember, the studio Gas Powered Games recently announced their own version of DotA, Demigod. Having played the beta, I can say that while it tried to copy the formula, it's good for novelty at best. I just couldn't capture the spirit of DotA. But to be fair, DotA has essentially been in development and improved upon for years and years.

But if Demigod couldn't do it, how can LoL?
Because the man behind League of Legends, or LoL, is one of the original creators. He knows everything about the development of DotA and its balance. More importantly, most importantly, Steve Feek will have the best understand of almost anyone about what limitations were put on them in developing the DotA mod. He'll have the best knowledge of what they needed in game for heroes, and what the WC3 World Editor couldn't let them do. And Riot Games will be developing its own engine. This is good news.

Here's a quote, for instance, from Riot Games president, Marc Merril;
"It's only one map ever, and it's still played by millions of people for years because it's so replayable, but there are really limited multiplayer services -- no matchmaking, no stat-tracking, no persistence. League of Legends is designed from the ground up to address the needs of the community and to evolve based on what the players want to see."
Now, for some LoL screenshots.

But, what is Dota?
Defense of the Ancients, or DotA, is by a wide, wide, gargantuan margin, the most played Warcraft 3 mod. Ever. It is still being fairly regularly updated, and upwards of a fuckton of people have played the game in its lifetime. It happens also to be awesome.

You control a single hero out of I think around 90 very unique heroes, from the overhead WC3 perspective.

Here's the easy way. There's the map. 5 players per team. See those three distinct lanes? a wave of creep spawns from each base in each lane ever 30 seconds or so. 3 towers for each side in each lane. That's it. Scourge's goal is to get into Sentinel base and destroy the World Tree. Sentinel want to destroy the Frozen Throne.

The game takes a good amount of skill and strategy, but mostly it takes knowing which of the 100+ items best benefit each of the 90 heroes, depending on how you're playing him.
