Can't Find A Job

I have a bit of a problem. My work history goes like this: I graduated high school in 2004 and for the first year I worked as a painter for a residential painting company. After that I immediately got a job working as an Autocad draftsman for a civil engineering firm. I've worked for about 3 different companies since then, usually for a year at a time. Well I was laid off two months ago due to a massive shortage of work.

I've been looking for a new drafting job but since the economy is terrible there is no new building. Basically my position doesn't exist anymore. I'm coming to the realization that I will have to find a "shit job" to pay the bills. Herein lies another problem. I have 0 experience in the retail or hospitality fields. I've never worked for a restaurant or clothing store or anything. I'm basically straight out of high school all over again. I'm living off unemployment right now but it isn't paying all my bills and certainly isn't going to last forever.

What I need is advice on where to look for jobs that don't require experience or ideas of what to do in this situation. Specifically ones that offer full time hours. Working for 15hrs a week at 7.50 at starbucks isn't going to cut it. I'm open to anything at this point, I'm pretty desperate. I need to make about 1000$ a month to survive.

I hate to say it, but are there any call centers (aka, Customer Contact Centers) in your area? It will slowly eat away at your soul, but there's a derth of them locally, and they're all paying $15/hr for 40h weeks + incentive plans if you're peddling anything. (Try to get incoming though, you'll at least be able to sleep at night.)

Failing that, go get some retail experience. You're on PA, so you must have at least passing knowledge of games, TVs, and computers. Throw your resume at BestBuy/FutureShop/etc. If there's nothing like that in the area, just go after every retail store in the shopping mall.

I'm sure your local hospital is hiring. There's a field that's pretty recession-proof, I think. Plus, you don't need much experience to be a courier, mop floors or do registration.

I don't think you'd need much experience to work in retail, but good luck getting full time. Getting a job is a bitch these days.

I'm in Tampa, FL area. This is the first time I've had a hard time finding work.

I've thought about call centers but honestly I don't think I have it in me to do that. I really despise scams and ripping people off. I figure if I'm going to do that I might as well just start robbing liquor stores.

The hospital? Really? Morton Plant is near my house, could I just walk in and ask if they are hiring?

Also, I had to sell my car when I was laid off. I have a motorcycle I use as main transportation now..

Edit: Ugh found this site - http://www.mpmhealth.org/body.cfm?id=434 There doesn't seem to be any hospital job openings.

Sign up with as many temp agencies in the area as you can. Often times the jobs/assignments you get through them are a great way to get money to pay bills while looking for something permanent.

You could prolly just give HR a call or check out the website.

... and the problem now is that a lot of jobs hire pt employees. Sometimes you have to bust your ass until you can get a ft position. Or just beg your boss for extra hours.

Work incoming calls. It's still got more grind than a coffee shop in fast-forward, but at least you're not pushing stuff on people or getting yelled at for calling during dinner.

How'd you get a drafting job out of high school, that seems like something that would usually require a college degree?

rather than searching for "Drafter" or "AutoCAD" positions, look for "Designer" or "Mechanical Designer" positions as they are generally AutoCAD operators with experience (there are at least a half dozen in a quick Monster search)

if that doesn't pan out, hospitals and schools are great places to get job security

nope, usually no degree is required and most firms will train you to use AutoCAD or whatever systems they use

Telemarketers are always hiring. As long as you can tolerate the soul crushing task of making many people angry in your first hour of work you can enjoy a decent pay rate and some of them even offer perks because the job itself sucks so much.

As much as it sucks, have you considered two retail/hospitality jobs? Grocery stores aren't that bad if you can get the hours you need (or get in the department you like) and gas stations were another one that are tolerable but not exactly high paying.

Well honestly I've been looking on Careerbuilder, hotjobs, monster and tboonline for anything and everything.

Also I got kinda lucky out of high school. My friend got me a job and I just steamrolled from there.

Don't use monster for job applications -- only use it to find companies which do work where you might be able to help them, then look up the company and apply directly to the decision maker.

Try to find every company in your town which might use someone who has some type of drafting skill in anything (there are lots), try to find out who the decision maker is, and mail them a letter/resume. Keep in mind that doing this, itself, is as much work as a fulltime job -- but way better than using monster.

Or, consider applying in different states or different countries. Canadian and Australian engineering companies would be good places to try.

Drafting is on the edge of being considered a vocational discipline. Many high schools in my area, for instance, have drafting courses folded in with other vocational courses. If you wanted post-graduate drafting training, I think you'd have to go to ITT or Uni of Phoenix, and those courses would likely be for very specific disicplines, not just "hey, can you draw me some p-lines for these vertical penetrations."

What about inbound technical support? Every major company has an internal technical support positions and many of them are staffed by real live Americans here in the US. I don't know how many are based out of Tampa, but there must be some. Pay for these range anywhere from $10-$30/hr... usually in the $10-$16/hr range. It's also not quite as soul crushing as telemarketing or the like, although you will come out of that job 100% certain you are the most brilliant person on earth and at least 50% of people are not fit to live and that Darwin was clearly wrong, since these people manage to survive for so long.

I know, I know. Your first comment is "But I'm not qualified for that, I don't fix computers and stuff." I say "The hell you're not". I've called tech support. I've worked tech support. 90% of those people don't know a damned thing and are likely less qualified than you are. They hire people with little experience and little technical knowledge. That is who they WANT to hire. You know why? The people with experience and knowledge want paid too much and they want promoted to real tech work asap and the companies want people who want to stay there, not people who want to move on to higher paying, more technical jobs as quickly as possible.

Pest control. Pay is pretty good and a friend of my husband, who didn't even finish highschool, got a job from Orkin. The hardest part for him was learning how to drive a stick shift (took him a week before he got comfortable), none of the company cars were automatic.
