Import questions... (PAL ICO on NTSC-U PS2)

Yeah, yeah, it's been a while since I've posted, but I've been really busy with my move to San Diego. IIRC, import talk and methods were still allowed, so here goes:

I'm finally getting a PS2. If you recall, I'm that insane game collector who never bought one though I bought both a PSP and a PS3 at-launch (still have it with a 120GB HDD; just can't play imports on it). Anyway, I've been slogging through a huge backlog of PS2 games and I've finally come to ICO. I must have it. The only place I can get it new is imported from PAL regions, which is extra incentive to buy new because it has extra content (vs. the NTSC-U version). My out-of-state friend did this with his PS2 because it is the only DVD version of ICO (other regions are on CD) and his PS2 will only play DVDs. Considering this and several JPN imports I'm interested in, I finally decided to buy a PS2.

I'm going to have a similar issue because all I have is FMCB (Free Memory Card Boot) with ESR and Memento/Memor32 (used with a friend's PS2 to install FMCB). Though the Memento website claims otherwise, these seem to only work with DVD. I've never followed the disc-swapping techniques, but I see that it is possible to run a swap program executable (ELF) from the memory cards with these methods (no need to buy a swap disc). How can I rig the lid to allow this without buying a swap kit? Is it possible to make my own tools to do this for the new "super slim" PS2 (integrated PSU)? Will it solve my friend's resolution problem? What "resolution problem?" This one: My friend has a Sony KDL-40XBR4 while I have a KDL-52XBR2 (pretty similar except his supports 120hz). He says that his set reports a 240p signal after selecting 60hz to get rid of the screen flickering/rolling, and he says "it certainly looks like 320x240 too." Isn't that HALF of what it should be? Is the NTSC version 320x240 also? FWIW, we are both using component cables, though his are some cheapy $1.50 ones I found in a clearance bin and gave him for free while mine are official.
