[Game On]Gametap

edited January 2007 in Games and Technology
With the latest splurge of gametap threads (all two of them) and several people proclaiming they are doing the trial, or have the service.

I was wondering if anyone actually wants to play a few lovely games.

I've been on a Neo-Geo shooter kick, but I'm really up for whatever.

If this gains enough interest, perhaps we can set up a list of names and games those folks are interested in.

My uh, Gametap name(?) is Exerex and I'm fucking around in Gunstar Heros right now... Add me and let's figure this thing out, or we can let this post fade into obscurity, that's okay too.

To get the free trial: Which is Crazy Taxi, Galaga, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Sonic The Hedgehog and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time plus any 3 games you want to try.

Go to http://www.gametap.com
Click on the Start Free Trial
Create an account (NO CREDIT CARD is needed)
When the "Subscription Plans" Page comes up, immediately after you make an account - look for a popup that says "5 of ours +3 of yours"
Click on Popup for Installer

Enjoy!

What happen when the trail runs out and do you need an American credit card to be able to play all the games?

When the trial runs out, it wont let you access the service and ask you to subscribe. And as far as I can tell, this is US only, so I assume only US credit cards will work.

If anyone wants to do a few rounds of Street Fighter 2 CE/Turbo or SFA3, I'll be all over it. Username is BiggNife.

There's about 50 arcade games that support online play right now, like the Street Fighters, Darkstalkers, GigaWing and Bust-a-Move. I wish it was more, but at least they seem add online play to three or four games each week.

I know I've had it for less than a day, but I can already tell I probably won't be lasting past the trial period. For the most part these are games that I'll only really play for maybe 5 minutes at a time, and that's only when I'm at the computer where I already have lots of games and things to do anyway.

I don't think any Genesis games have multi. I dont know if theres a website anywhere with the full list, but its around 50 arcade/neo-geo games. For some reason the SF game lobbies are down, but I think theyll be back up soon. I hope so, at least. I emailed them about it and all I got was automated back. Usually replying back gets a response by a human being, so we'll see.

Seems like I'll stick around on the trial for the Sam and Max Culture Shock 1, then see if it's worth it to continue.

The multiplayer in Galaga and Street Fighter lags for me :?
It affects the gameplay to the point where it's hard to attack in Street Fighter, and Galaga's enemies move too fast, making them jump at some points.

Most of the cool games are Arcade games and old PC games.
Atari + Commodore + those obscure old systems = Fodder
    Genesis + Game Gear + DC + PC + Arcade = Cool

Well, I just played a round of Super SF2, and it there was only one bout of lag the entire match. Not game-ruining, imo. I think in general, the lag is inconsistent, which is what I hear about the 360 version too. I'll be willing to play more tomorrow.

They need online support for Worms Armageddon and Heroes of Might and Magic III. Worms especially.

I posted this in the Sam and Max thread, but it makes more sense here...

Cheap Ass Gamer reports that Gametap is running a deal for $5 a month. The catch is that it's only for signing up annually.

You've got access to the entire library during your trial, which includes Sam & Max.

Also, a neat trick to try is to call to cancel your account afterward. More likely than not, the support rep will give you an extra month free. Fortunately, while they may be somewhat persistent in keeping you (the last time I cancelled, they just asked me why I'm canceling and then processed it), they don't stoop as low as AOL when trying to cancel.

How is cancelling on gametap? do you need to call or can you do it online. I want to use that ncta code to get a free month, but I don't want to have to waste my minutes on calling them.

I hear you have to call them to cancel. Also, can you mod the games you get through this? Im interested in torment and such but wondering if any of the mods will work with this service.

guys i just finished Sam and Max episode 3- it is *so* much better than the first two episodes. much better dialog and puzzle elements. it reminded me more of the classic LucasArts style of adventure gaming that I felt was lacking in the first two episodes. the reviews on episode 2 were lower than the first episode (i believe), but don't let that turn you away from future episodes!

to answer the cancel question, yeah, you have to call to cancel.

so how does this work? You pay monthly fee and have access to a wide range of older games, all made XP compatible. As soon as you stop paying said fee, you loose access to the games, including ones you have allready downloaded?

being finicky about semantics, you lose access to the games when your billing cycle runs out. so you could cancel and still have access up to the games until your current billing cycle ends.

and they aren't exactly gone when you stop paying. your save files are stored locally so if you decide to stop and come back later, you dont have to start over.
