Why does FTP hate me?

edited October 2008 in Help / Advice Forum
So I'm having a problem. As of this afternoon I am no longer able to FTP from my computer. I don't know what would cause this or why it would be happening, but hopefully you lovely people can give me a hand.

I cannot connect to: guild website FTP, personal website FTP, portfolio website FTP, school FTP. That is 3 different hosts. I am able to log into the various CPanels fine and have no issue there. However when I FTP either through a client like FileZilla, or through explorer the connection just times out.

This is boggling my mind, since it worked this morning, hell it worked yesterday for me to upload some dog pictures, and now I'm being cockblocked.

I've refreshed my router, rebooted my computer and repaired my internet connection. I have Verizon FiOS and Vista 64. Any clues?

I would say firewall related but it wouldn't happen all of the sudden like this. Are you sure you didn't switch something by accident in your FTP program?

I actually have my firewall turned off currently. Nope, I haven't changed any settings (outside of the past hour of me trying to mess with it)

The only thing I can think of is that I hammered one of my servers about 40 times in as many seconds earlier in the day out of complete frustration.

Obviously you can connect to the internet still, it almost sounds like something funky going on with your provider? I'm pretty novice at network troubleshooting so I'll stop giving suggestions, haha.

I'm assuming your trying to FTP into servers outside your local network. Do you have any FTP servers inside your network you could try? That should at least tell you if its a problem with your workstation.

Nope, no FTP servers internally. I wonder if it has something to do with my router, of which I can't remember the password for since I haven't had any internet issues in over a year. A call to Verizon might be needed tomorrow.

Also I'm still able to access the cpanel of all of the sites I have FTP access to. I can upload files through there but it's tedious and I'd obviously like to get this issue resolved.

hmm, it looks like the FTP isn't recognizing my external IP address, any idea what might have caused this and what a fix would be?

I have an FTP I can open to you briefly, hold on and I'll PM you the info

[edit] Looks like a NAT issue.

Try using the IP for robothero.com - 72.29.75.135

It looks like from the first error it wasn't able to resolve the domain name. Also your FTP service is up and running on that server so it appears to be a local issue.

Everything seems to have fixed itself now after I gave it a nice 10 hour cooldown. No idea why all this was happening. Thanks Ruckus et al.
