The Radiohead model and smaller bands; The Mountain Goats' Satanic Messiah

When Radiohead released In Rainbows it was supposed to revolutionize the music business, or something. They were giving their music away, unless you wanted to pay for it, in which case you could. It worked out pretty good for them because, well, Radiohead fans are pretty much crazy.

Enter The Mountain Goats. They are nowhere near as popular as Radiohead, but they have a devoted fan base. They've decided to test out the Radiohead model with a new EP.
You can find it here:

It's pretty good. More of a classic Mountain Goats feel, with no drums and no violins (well, ok, there are some drums but not a whole lot). Just John, his guitar and his piano.

itt we talk about how the Radiohead model will work for smaller bands, and also about how great the Mountain Goats are.

Also, are there any other bands you know of that have released albums or EPs like this?

Saul Williams did it with his last album, Niggy Tardust. He released it with the help of Trent Reznor, and last I heard, Trent was kinda mad because it didn't sell as well as they expected, but then again, it wasn't that great of an album either.

Also Girl Talk did it with his newest album, but I don't think there's any info yet about how well that went.

    PS The Mountain Goats rule.

    Hasn't NIN done it, too?

Nice, I like it so far. I might give $3 because I like John. Hopefully he does well releasing it this way. I don't think I would've bought a small EP otherwise, but there's a greater likelihood I will now.

Ghosts wasn't really a traditional album, though. And The Slip was just straight-up free.
