Wireless broadband problems

Hey everyone, I hope you can help me out with a couple problems I'm having with my wireless connection in my university house.

I live with 7 other guys, and we each receive our wireless signal from the same modem, same wireless signal transmitter. My pc didn't have a wireless card built in, so I bought a 802.11 b/g WLAN USB adaptor, one of those dongles you just plug into the usb of the computer and it picks up the wireless signal.

My 2 questions are:

1- Out of all my housemates, I live the furthest away, and I was wondering if there was something like a signal booster I could use to improve my connection speed (I get disconnected relatively frequently and have trouble connecting to the internet again every time I'm chucked out), is there anyway I could improve the quality of my connection from my room? Should I buy a new dongle?

2- Two of my housemates are being stubborn and insist that the wired connections to the wireless transmitter they are using does not have an adverse effect on everyone's wireless connection in the house, but it seems to me while they are connected they get a very good connection while the rest of our connections are very slow. Does this sound right?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

@1: You could get a new dongle, as there are dongle/router-combinations that work better than others. You'd have to do some research first, though, so you don't buy one that gives you a worse connection.
You could also get a better antenna for either the router (or access point or whatever is connected to the modem) or your dongle. There's also guides for selfbuilt "range extender"-antennas for routers that should work. (I'd only have links in german, but you'll probably find something yourself)
Also you can try different positions of the antennas on both ends, that can help a lot.

@2: If I understand you right, you have 8 people sharing one internet-connection. What may happen is that those 2 guys just use up all the bandwidth (because the wired connection is faster than whatever is on the other end of the modem) and that leaves no room for anyone else. You would have to configure the router in a way that will leave enough bandwidth for everyone. If that isn't possible through the router setup, then you have to ask them to throttle their down- and upload on their PCs or just do big downloads during the night (or day, depending on your internet-using habits :P)
