I've just started playing again. Thanks a lot you guys.
Also, games like this NEEd a quicksave. Make it atuodelete when loaded if you have to, but really. Quicksave. There's no excuce not to have one.
Their excuse is perfectly fine: Evac, Zoom, church. Just like it always was, old school. You might as well say the game needs to have more party members or an "active time" battle system. Of course it might be nice, but that's not the point of DQ8.

I was always a fan of the "leave your NES on overnight" method. I used to have such ridiculous RPG finishing times in the SNES era because of this.
I do wish there were a one-time-use quicksave, like they instated in the GBA FF4. I've been late to work a few times because of DQ8.
She'll also pour nearly all of Jessica's skill points into Sex Appeal, because she thinks it's hysterical.
Can anyone honestly say that they didn't do the same thing the first time through? Any of us? They might as well have not even given access to the other choices until Sex Appeal was maxed out... :P

About that skill set
[spoiler:1cfb918361]do you only get the same skill with different inuentos? Have I spelt that right?[/spoiler:1cfb918361]
It took almost two years for me to complete DW3. Bought this game over a year ago when it first came out. Still haven't completed it, but I "love" it and DW3 as well. I plan on finishing this and Disgaea 2 sometime over the holiday.
[spoiler:0bce8c4da6]do you only get the same skill with different inuentos? Have I spelt that right?[/spoiler:0bce8c4da6]
I'm not sure why that needed to be spoiler tagged, but...
Most of the actual abilities you get through the Sex Appeal skill seem fairly useless, to be perfectly honest (I'm hoping that the final ability for that skill will be something at least occasionally useful). The Puff-puff skill is probably the best one....not that it's especially useful (even when it actually works, the value of causing one enemy to skip their turn at the cost of giving up your own turn is...questionable). But the animation for the ability alone more than makes up for any lack of usefullness... :winky:

I've avoided FAQs for the most part, but I've noticed that as I bumped up Jess' Sex Appeal, more and more often monsters would randomly be dazed for one turn, which as a passive skill comes in handy all the time.
My favorite is when a monster tries to use Puff-Puff on Jessica. [spoiler:4c0d81a0ed]"Jessica laughs, having won the battle of the bulges." :winky:[/spoiler:4c0d81a0ed]

I believe an animation of this spell needs to be posted, ASAP.

Yeah, that's probably the most useful part of the whole thing, the passive aspect. It's not just your imagination, it actually shows under Jessica's Attributes tab in the menu what the current chance is of a monster becoming mesmerized by her "assets" during combat. The chances go up the more points you put into Sex Appeal.
Can anyone honestly say that they didn't do the same thing the first time through? Any of us? They might as well have not even given access to the other choices until Sex Appeal was maxed out... :P
I didn't. But then, I did up her whip skill first thing, so...make of that what you will.
about the dragon graveyard, im at that part now and isnt it required to progress the storyline? im lvl 31, do i need to lvl up still or is it gonna be hard to make it through?

That should be all right, depending on how you've been distributing skill points and equipment and such.
The boss at the end is pretty rough, though, if your defense isn't high enough.
But if you're able to take out the monsters with relative ease, I say go for it. Doing that quest unlocks the casino, which gives you access to some absolutely kickass equipment.

Whips all the way for me. I put in enough for the passive chance of mesmerizing an enemy and never touched it again.

The final ability of sex appeal is crazy good. I'd put it in my top 3 skills of the game for sure and it makes the general mediocrity of sex appeal worth it.

I started off with knives, which was a trap, IMO. Once I realized it sucked for how I played, I maxed the whips. Gringham Whip + Twin Dragon Lash makes me very happy.
Which way did you end up going with the Hero? Swords + Courage is what I did, as I wanted the sterotypical hero.

Not to me, but I'll answer anyway. Because I'm nosy.
I did Courage and Boomerangs up to, like, power throw, then I maxed Spear and Courage. Boomerangs are a godsend for the random battles.

Multi-thrust is a great boss killer, too.
Max tensioned, Oomph'd multi-thrust + max tensioned, Oomph'd twin dragon lash = dead everything.
I went with Swords and Courage on the Hero. I didn't really consider anything else; I wanted the stereotypical hero. Also I wasn't going to have anyone else use swords and it seems sort of a waste to pass up the best weapons in the game. I trained Jessica in Sex Appeal and Staves, which I kinda regret since they overlap a bit. Sex Appeal and whips would have probably been better. On the other hand she has TONS of MP... I tend to hoarde MP in RPGs anyway.
Unfortunately, I was kind of all over the place with my early skill point distribution...if I ever play through the game again, I'll have a much better idea of what I want to do.
With the Hero, I started off putting points into swords...then started putting them into boomerangs when I realized how much easier boomerangs make things in the early part of the game. But then I didn't want to go too far into boomerangs, because ultimately I wanted him to use a sword...but I didn't want to put a lof of points into swords yet because I wasn't really using swords at that point. So I ended up focusing my points into Courage. Now his Courage is maxed out, and I'm focusing the points into swords again (now that there are some kickass swords available).
Yangus in particular is a mess. I started off putting some points into axes...switched to scythes a little while in, then switched to maces when I started seeming to always find better maces than any other type of available weapon for him. Of course, I just finished maxing out his mace skill.....so naturally that's exactly the point at which I find an axe that completely destroys any other weapon I've found in the game thus far.....'doh!
Jessica and Angelo are actually in better shape. I focused on Sex Appeal and whips for Jess (mainly Sex Appeal, putting points into whips when I hit the current level cap for her Sex Appeal skill), and Swords for Angelo (using Charisma, or whatever it's called, as my spillover category for him).
I just started this game myself, and I had a couple questions.
First, how long can I expect the game to last? Just the main storyline itself.
And second, I just got Angelo and up to this point I had been spreading each character's skill points between a handful of their skills. Should I narrow my focus to just one skill per character? Any general advice in that area?

It's a very long game. Generally seems to last people a good 70-80 hours, but it can vary depending on how much you grind, if you get into the whole Monster Arena, and so on.
As for skills, its up to you. I had each character raise one weapon and whatever their personal one was (Courage, Sex Appeal, etc), seemed to work out okay. Some in boomerangs for the hero is pretty nice. It's up to you, really.

For the Hero, you would be best to go with either Swords or Spears, and Courage
For Yangus, I went with Axes until I got Helm Splitter, then I went with Scythes because I wanted to be able to steal. I also went with Humanity.
For Jessica I went with swords for a bit, but Whips and Sex Appeal work great, unless you want to be a kick ass mage. Then go for Staves.
Angelo should probably be swords if you don't do it with the Hero, simply because of the Metal King Sword. You are stuck with the same bow for awhile if you choose bows.... I really can't remember what else I did without firing up the machine.
Thats how I did it.
The Game should last at least 40 hours if you enjoy the story. I'm sure people can get it done faster, but I'll be damned if I would ever figure out a way to get past a certain boss with a low level.....
edit- my game lasted alot longer, so I really can't give a good estimate of how short it is capable of being. I am pretty meticulous when it comes to collecting everything in the game, and with the small medals, it keeps me busy.

Boomerangs are absolutely amazing in early to mid game for random battles. They're not that great for bosses, though, so you should always keep a spear or sword on hand, too.
A lot of the later skills are pretty shit, too, so don't put too many points into them. Put in enough to get the second attack boost and Power Throw and you'll be good to go.

That's about right. That's the skill level I got to, but even so I used boomerangs for almost all the boss fights as well. The damage was consistently equal or almost equal when you figured in the bonuses, although really I just didn't want to put that thing down. The best boomerang in the game is spectacular and so totally worth it.

If you are planning on completing the optional end quests, boomerangs because vastly inferior to swords and spears. Falcon Slash with an Uber falcon Blade or Multi-thrust with the Metal King Spear are good for massive damage when tensioned and Oomphed
Right, I eventually gave up on them because you need spears for leveling. I think I had to sacrifice the Metal King Spear for the boomerang though, and that is worth it.
So, this game is $17.99 at Sam's Club... Should I buy it the next time I'm up there?
This game is worth $50, if you ask me.
Now, update on my progress.
I've met Gyser. It's easily one of the funniest Bosses I've ever run into. XD I don't know why it amuses me so... and the voice acting is top notch.
Heck, this entire game has that quality. The voice acting is some of the best, and everything is so smooth.
Back to the boss.
I died, I don't know how good I did, but I died.
But... it's not the same.
Since all you do is loose half your cash (and I still have more money then I did when I set out, BTW) it's a lot more fogiving to die, which makes the harder difficulty much easier for some reason.

Half your money is not a minor thing in this game. I must stress that it's usually better to reset unless you would lose hours of progress. You're still at the beginning so everything is inexpensive and you haven't lost much, but later on you will be cursing at the 5 digit numbers.
Until you get to the part where you can basically get rich quick.

I love it. There's just a charm and innocense to this game that I haven't seen since I played Wind Waker.
I can't help but smile as I play... all the characters I've met so far (and there have been quite a few) are awesome and feel just alive.

Until you get to the part where you can basically get rich quick.
Yawn.
