My computer has decided there's no such thing as Nvidia drivers

So last night I was getting my Civ4 on when the monitor started flickering for a few moments, then the game crashed to desktop. I shrugged, fired up a different game, and was told that did not compute. I open up my Nvidia control panel and the first thing I see is that SLI has been disabled. I go ahead and re-enable, but this suddenly causes my display to shrivel to 640x480 with 4 bit color quality. I restart, no change. I download and install Nvidia's latest drivers, no change.

When attempting to change something via Display in Control Panel, the following message pops up when I select the 'Settings' tab:

"The currently selected graphics display driver can not be used. It was written for a previous version of Windows, and is no longer compatible with this version of Windows.

The system has been started using the default VGA driver.

Please contact your hardware manufacturer to get an upgraded driver, or select one of the Microsoft provided drivers."

I'm clueless as to what to do, since my computer's not been this thoroughly stupid before. I'm also unable to access the Nvidia control panel for some reason.

My operating system is Windows XP Professional. My GPUs are GeForce 6800 XT in an SLI configuration.

I reeeeeeally hope it's not a physical problem with the GPUs or, perhaps, the monitor. (I posted a thread about its problems before, but nobody replied :\ ) I seriously, seriously can't afford to get new components right now.

I'm hoping that, worst-case scenario, all I have to do is reinstall XP. It'd be a huge hassle, but I could definitely live with it.

(By the way, if it turns out a reinstall is necessary, does anybody know the name of that one program that lets you strip the junk out of an XP install CD? The utility also exists for Vista, but I'm really hoping to dodge that particular OS for as long as humanly possible).

Sid Meier got freaky with some settings, happened to me when I tried playing Civ4. It's no biggie, just roll that sucker back a few days.

I had almost the same thing happen to me when I was playing F.E.A.R. Now granted civ games aren't as taxing as an FPS, but once my system konked out no game would play. System restore did nothing, but a format did, but the problem came back. Turned out that the 20mm cooling fan on my 9800 pro died and the card was overheating. Might be something worth looking at.

Mm, is there any way to fix a cooling fan, short of getting a new card?

They can most of the time be replaced, not a huge deal. What model/make of card do you have?

I have two GeForce 6800 XTs in an SLI configuration.

EDIT: Yeah, it turns out neither fan is working. Awesome.

So, any suggestions for fixing the fans?

Okay, the way I look at it, I have the following options:

    1. Fix the fans on my video cards...somehow.

    2. Get new fans from Newegg, put those in.

    3. Get a new graphics card.

    4. Reinstall XP.

    5. Mix 'n match.

I don't understand why my video cards would stop working, or why I'd get that message I posted about the drivers being for an obsolete version of Windows when I most definitely selected XP when downloading the drivers.

And why wouldn't the video cards start working again -- even temporarily -- after a restart? I mean, just having the computer idling on the desktop shouldn't be too taxing for them.

Really, I've seen no evidence that it's just the fans -- it seems like there's also a problem either with the cards themselves, or with the OS.

I've tried reinstalling the drivers several times now...I think I'm going to try uninstalling them before another reinstall attempt.

Well those fans weren't running for however long while being stressed (gaming). Heat does all kinds of crazy things. What I described above being one of the more crazier events heat has caused me. Like you I tried reinstalling those VC drivers over and over to no avail. It wasn't until after a format that everything had gone back to normal.

I'm not usually the one to say format, but it did work for me and may be something that you may want to consider.
