Revisiting Assassin's Creed

OhioOhio Registered User regular
edited April 2009 in Games and Technology
I would like to buy a new game, but not spend $60 since there's so much coming out soon.

At Gamestop there are so many used copies of Assassin's Creed, for just 19.99. Since it's been almost a year, I wonder what your final opinions of this game are. It was one of the few major AAA releases I never got and so I feel like I should.

Some will say it sucks. Some will say they loved it. I've heard all the complaints, the main one being "You do the same thing over and over again."

Can you help me decide?

Your mileage may vary. It depends how sedate a pace you want.

It's not for those people who want set pieces all the time and a very linear experience.

Exploring the city with no HUD on adds to the thrills, manipulating the environment like a 3d platformer is also great.

I enjoyed the game immensely and felt it one of the best of 2007, on the other hand, a lot of people did not.

You will find a lot of repetition in the game, with maybe 5 or 6 stock missions repeated for each district of a city, 3 districts per city, 4 cities. So yeah, you will be collecting a lot of flags, interrogating a lot of people, over and over.

I found the pace of the game very appealing, it is not fast paced, and could best be described as acting on impulse. When stalking a target, you have all the time in the world to plan a route, scout an escape, but when the shit hits the fan and the guards rush you, getting the fuck out of dodge is a thrilling rooftop chase sequence.

There is nothing you cant climb up, no roof that is inaccessible, no part of town sealed off. Damascus and Jerusalem share a very similar palette but Acre is a standout city in my opinion.

Climbing acre cathedral was one of the standout gaming moments of last year.

Basically, play it slow and you will enjoy it more. Absolutely turn off the HUD from the start completely and use your own senses to find your way. Dont consult a map all the time, learn the layout of the cities and you will have a great time.

Play it as a fetch quest running from point A to B to C by always checking the map every 10 seconds will result in a stilted, monotonous experience. The idea is that you shouldnt need a map because the layout of the areas is very distinctive, allowing you to climb high towers to discover the area.

I really enjoyed it. Then again, I got it for free, but $20 isn't bad either.

The game is not meant to be played doing story required missions only. You absolutely HAVE to to take a couple breaks in between missions and just enjoy running around the city. If you can't enjoy just watching Altiar hop around on roof tops and climb random buildings then you should really just give up, you won't enjoy the rest of the game.

Here's the great thing about used games and GameStop though, you can return it with a few days. If you get it home play it and discover that's its not your cup of tea then you can go back the next day and pick up Crackdown instead (a game that I thought was a TON of fun, but short.) . Just remember, they only let you do it once on a receipt, so you can go and return the game that you got instead.

This right here. I enjoyed the crap out of this game, but mostly when I wasn't following the plot missions. As was mentioned, the plot missions get a little repetitive and really, in my opinion, only serve to open up new areas. I enjoyed the game greatly just for my ability to scan the horizon, see some weird ass building, decide I'm going to climb to the top of it, and then do it. Don't get me wrong, the plot missions aren't terrible, I just think they don't really highlight what's best about the game, which is the freedom to go wherever you want. Also, systematically removing all the guards from an area without getting caught has it's own appeal.

Turn off the HUD, take it slow and let yourself enjoy the game.

When you fight, fight in a way you find fun and cinematic, don't go for raw efficiency. Make sure to switch up what weapons you use to keep the game fresh for yourself.

I'm of mixed feelings about the game: I agree in theory with reviewers and other players who argue that it's repetitive in terms of gameplay goals, and yet I had an unbelievable amount of fun playing it. It's one of the few games of that length (I did every single mission save the flags) that I actually wanted more of when it was done.

Two caveats you need to know before playing:

    1) They leave the game on an inexcusably sharp cliffhanger. Be prepared to be a little angry.
    2) The flags, they do nothing. On the 360 version, I think there are some achievement points or something, but like most things in GTA IV, the devs decided to provide no reward whatsoever for this collection minigame. This is a GOOD thing, since trying to collect every flag could do lasting psychological damage. Note, however, that this shouldn't prevent you from exploring the world: there are huge, fascinating areas of the main map that you'll never encounter playing through the story.

Melee combat with throwing knives is awesome. Combat doesn't really pick up until you get counter kills, but once you do you're all like "shut the fuck up, I'm middle eastern Batman mother fuckers, only I'm rather white for some reason and I actually kill people. *stab* *stab*"

Yes this. As soon as you get the timing down on the hidden blade counter, you will begin to deliberately piss off guards just for an excuse to instakill a horde of them.

I'd say it's worth it for 20 bucks.

I didn't enjoy this game at all; I played a grand total of one mission that was challenging. The lead up to the missions was always very easy and repetitive. The missions themselves are almost impossible to fail; if you screw up the stealthy assassination, you can just murder all the guards and your target, or chase him down (which is one of the few fun parts, actually). Combat is very easy. There is no real platforming to speak of, because Altair does all the work for you; your job is to plan your route, which generally has no real consequence if you're paying attention, since you can outrun everyone even with a poorly chosen route. The "epic chase sequences" where you escape after a mission are fun, but they last about one minute, since at any given moment, you can see more automatic escape areas - hay bales, curtained gazebos, etc - than guards on screen.

The positive parts are that the game is very pretty, sometimes awe-inspiring; the writing isn't too bad; although Altair's voice actor is terrible, everyone else is pretty great; the movement is very kinetic and satisfying, even though you as a player are simply holding the stick in one direction to make it all happen; the combat and stealth kills are pretty awesome to watch; there's opportunities to create your own fun by fucking with villagers etc; immersion is easy to achieve if you want it, due to appearance and atmosphere; and if you're willing to put restrictions on yourself, like fleeing instead of fighting when you fail an assassination attempt (even though you're an unstoppable murder machine), you can add some challenge to an otherwise remarkably easy game.

Again, not worth full price, totally worth a try for 20 bucks. Rentals are about 10 dollars where I live, at this point, so it's basically worth it just to see if it creates the experience you want.

To be honest, I didn't like Dead Rising nearly as much as I thought I would. The premise is fantastic, the characters are great, the story is typical Zombie/Capcom camp, but... it didn't click with me.

I found the controls unresponsive and it is RETARDED that you can BREAK and LEAD PIPE while smacking around a zombie. Lead pipes don't break Capcom. Also I didn't like the whole rescue people aspect because I'm OCD as hell and tried to save everyone on my first play through. It doesn't work that way.

I had a great time with Assassin's Creed, to the point of getting 980/1000 achievement points, including the flag hunt. Probably my favourite part of the game was getting into a fight with 20+ enemies at once; the combat system is great fun, but enemies sometimes attack too slowly or too little, so you need to pile on the enemies to get a constant sequence of parry/riposte, combo attacks, and general badassery. The combat, while simple, was definitely the highlight of the game for me, and I wish more 3rd-person action games (I'm looking at you Fable 2!) had the same system of combos/counters/finishing moves. For AC2, the only thing I want is for Ubi to add the stealth system from Splinter Cell on top of the acrobatics and swordfighting. Oh god, I'd never play another game again.

Oh, and killing 20 guys at once with just the Hidden Blade (100% counters) is the most awesome thing ever. EVER!

So many positives, needs more negatives.

Fantastic premise, enjoyable story, pretty game, fun controls. Easily abused combat... but the combat isn't fun.

Absolutely no variance. IMO it's not truly open ended. It's just get to the point, here are the same people, buildings, rooftops, guards, traps on the way there. There's little to no reward for exploring or taking alternate paths. Flags don't count.

Had fun at first but got so bored that I couldn't finish despite enjoying the story.

I wish there were more exciting missions, the game could be so fun.

I very much enjoyed assassins creed, but it was not without its faults. Personally, I really liked the combat, it took a little getting used to but once you got the hang of it, you pretty much became death on two legs. My issues with it, were the fact that I had to turn down hardware acceleration on my system in order to get sound, and the fact you couldn't skip cutscenes. Don't get me wrong, cutscenes are great the first time, but if you just wanna get through and replay the missions having to sit through a loooooong cutscene gets really irritating after a while.

One thing I absolutely loved about the game was the freedom of movement and the beauty of the setting. Leaping from rooftop to rooftop in Jerusalem or Acre was positively fucking gorgeous. Assassinating that guy on the tall ship in Acre was also pretty nifty, especially when it came time for the chase.
