The American Presidency: Ka-Powell!
Posts
Hannity gave his talking points and then started to attack Powell ("He's either changed or has bought into the rhetoric"). That's when I shut him off and came back into work.
The election really has become a referrendum on Obama, which should make his 2012 run a piece of cake, since it'll be the same campaign...
Or is Mitt getting the hell off the sinking ship to set up his 2012 run. Exciting!
"Obama's just waiting to destroy this country! He's friends with Bill Ayers!"
"Yeah, and if he wanted to destroy it, he'd have done it by now. STFU."
Actually I care more about this than Ayers, Rezko and Wright put together.
Not because it affects his policy decisions, but because I feel like I gotta dock a guy a few points for getting addicted to cigarettes, or anything really.
Just ask Charlie Crist!
Also: I feel kinda stupid seeing this post together with my avatar.

Oh come on, we all have our addictions. And it was a generational thing, when he grew up cigarettes weren't known for the horrible cancerous deaths that they are today.

You know who else smoked cigarettes?

I think just about all politicians are addictioned to something. Maybe not a substance, but certainly other things like adoration, attention, power, etc.

I'd buy that if we were talking about McCain.
I'd say even more so for Obama, look at the 70's and hell even the 80s. All the cool people on TV smoked.

Stay classy, anonymous nutjobs.
This is either a funny joke, or it's funny because it's not true in the slightest. I can't tell which.
Either way, I'm not going to fault the guy for falling of the wagon. It's just a few cigs, and I'm confident he'll get it under control. It's not like he's bumming coke off campaign staff or something.

This election is more than a referendum on Obama. It's also a referendum on Bush. The reason McCain is trying to make it a referendum on Obama is because he's tied intimately to Bush, whether fairly or not. The more people think of McCain, the more they think of Bush, and that's not a winning strategy.
But to the extent it's a referendum on Obama, it's a referendum on his character and his potential. Both of those are pretty easy to run on - he's a charismatic and inherently cool individual and he's clearly a smart guy who has plans targeted directly at key demographics.
In 2012, yes, it will be a referendum on Obama, just like it is with every incumbent. But it will be on his performance as president for the last 4 years, not just on how charming and affable he is. And that could be easy or hard to pull off, depending on not only how Obama does, but how kind fate is to him. He could be the most brilliant and able president ever, but if the economy continues to tank despite him making the correct decisions at every turn and keeping the tanking to a minimum, the public won't give a shit. He'll be out on his ass.
That said, four years is a long time, and I think Obama will be able to turn things around if he's as competent as he sounds so far, especially with a cooperative congress. And if things are even marginally better than they are now, I think he has the political savvy to spin that in his favor and retake the WH. But it's far from a given. I mean, if the CDS market implodes, it's pretty much game over, so who knows?

I don't know -- he hasn't addressed his relationship with coke dealers at all. It should be looked into; I think the american people deserve to know the truth.
I think the implication is that Ayers, Rezko, and Wright are so inconsequential that something involving Obama's health is actually noteworthy.
Martin Sheen?
Even if Obama said fuck it and gave every SOTU address with a smoking cigarette in his hand, I wouldn't care much. Let the dude have his one vice.
What if he had a White Russian in his other hand, and was dressed in a bath robe?
So, did FDR do really good in his first term? Cause that Depression lasted a while and dude got elected more than anybody
Throw in him having Michelle give him Oral half way through and we'd have the best presidential address ever.

There was an article recently-ish by some conservative saying that the McCain campaign should try to find Obama's past coke-dealer. Yeah.
“Hi, I was just calling to let you all know that Barack Obama needs to get hung."

That rug really tied the Oval Office together.
Man, why'd you have to nuke Oregon? It really tied the west coast together.

Much of the New Deal's alphabet soup came during his first term: the CCC, the WPA, the TVA, etc. Unemployment was extremely high throughout the '30s, but it went from around 20% to 15% by the time he was up for reelection in '36.
He also created the FDIC and Social Security during that time, as well as signed the NLRA, which allowed workers to unionize.
So yeah, he did pretty well. He got 61% of the vote in '36.
Well, his first 100 days he got a ton of shit passed. The New Deal was good for the most part. But things weren't that much better in 1936 than in 1932, but he was so damn hopeful and we'll get through thisish and generally Americans don't like to vote out incumbents so they didn't.
Charisma and general communications mastery is extremely helpful. Also things got a bit better. Some combination of those = re-election.
