Help! My 360 freezes before I can clean the HD cache

I posted this in help/advice yesterday, but with no replies, so I'm reposting it in here. I've checked other threads, but they seem to be re: the xbox in general freezing, not just the HD acting up. So here's hoping that one of you console genii can figure this one out for me:

My 360 started acting up yesterday, freezing and generally being very unhelpful. After tracking down the problem on the Xbox support page, I removed the hard drive and tried playing without. No problems. Awesome!

Unfortunately, the site said that to fix the HD, you should reinsert it, then go to the system blade, select memory - and beyond that is kind of pointless to go on, because the 360 freezes up before I even get to the system blade.

Any suggestions? If worst comes to worst, I can go out and buy a new HD (with the dashboard updated coming, it's about time I got a 60gig anyway), but I'd really like to just clean up this one. Is there a hardware method to reset the HD? Anything?

Do you have a network cable plugged in? Almost sounds like it's crashing when it logs you into Live. can you get over to the system tab if you take out the network cable?

Oooh. Hadn't thought of that. I'll give that a go, thanks.

Okay. That worked. I cleared the cache (twice), but unfortunately my profile still acts up. However, when I try to log on to Xbox Live with my flatmate's profile, everything works fine.

So. The guide says to delete all save games for the game that is acting up, but since this happens even without a game in, should I delete my entire profile? And if so, when I grab it from Xbox live again, will I regain all my save games?

Very annoying, but at least it seems like I'm making progress. Thanks!

You will lose all progress in your games if you delete your profile and then recover it. Although I seem to remember that it asks you if you want to delete a profile's extra content, you can try keeping it the first time around.

I had this exact same problem a few weeks ago. I figured out it was a corrupted download that had not finished.

To fix the issue, I left my network adapter unplugged and started the system. I went into my HDD and manually cleared out the download and some other extraneous stuff that I didn’t need. Try that, and hopefully you can resolve your issue.
