Craigslist posters with gender preferences

So, a female friend of mine is looking at craigslist postings. She's found a really nice one that she's looked into, and it's a guy with a really fancy house, asking for one or two roommates, female only. She says it's because many people with nice houses are concerned that guys are more likely to cause damage to the home. That seems like an odd cop out to me, and I view it in a sketchier way. Is this just the devil inside me talking? Is this normal at all?

What is this I don't even.

An e-mail and a phone call to the guy ought to settle the matter, but off the cuff it is kind of weird since women are not inherently more responsible than men.

She's met with him. This decision is totally out of my hands, and is more of a, "This is odd to me, I wonder what other opinions are."

It's a bullshit excuse but it's pretty normal to find on Craigslist. Some people think that women make for better housemates. Other people would prefer to have guys as housemates for whatever reason (which is probably just as bullshit, mind you).

Personally I find it a bit creepy that one guy with a nice house is looking for two women to share it, and I suspect that his motives have little or nothing to do with the perceived cleanliness of said roommates, but that's just my cynical side talking. It's Craigslist, after all.

I don't think it's that crazy, especially if it's the guys house (which you say is nice) and generally the stereotypes are fairly accurate that women are cleaner than men. Or that he might feel more confident setting house rules and confronting women than men. If it was just one house mate it would be creepier than two.

See, I agree. He has a really nice pool, too. Maybe it's just because deep down I'm a creep, but I just imagine this guy with binoculars watching the pool. (Or worse.) I have been known to be overprotective of my female friends, though. (I think this might be one of those "a liar thinks everyone is lying things" /laugh)

This is pretty normal - I don't think I've ever seen a "Room for Rent" advertising section without at least a substantial "Female Only" section. Hell, I've even put in such ads (at landlord request, we had 3 guys + 1 girl in the original lease and he wanted to keep that ratio). Way of the world

    ?

Serious answer; I agree with the above; either a sketchy form of 'finding company' or simply believes that women will be cleaner/quieter/less trouble.

Without more information, it could go either way.

It's a really nice place. A guy who doesn't immediately express that he's gay. He wants one or two roommates, female only, to share the place with him. When he was met with in person, he said it was because he thinks that female roommates are cleaner and less likely to damage the house.

I guess if they had seen him then they should be able to judge pretty quickly what he is like.

It should also be noted that it is probably illegal discrimination, and a violation of the Fair Housing Act

Postings like that are definitely in violation of the Fair Housing Act, and you can report them to Craigslist to get them removed.

Shared living arrangements (female looking for female roommate because bathroom is shared) are an exception, but obviously that doesn't apply in this case.

If you read, it doesn't say it has to be the same sex.

"Shared Housing Exemption -- If you are advertising a shared housing unit, in which tenants will be sharing a bathroom, kitchen, or other common area, you may express a preference based upon sex only."

Yup. Normally he would be protected by the following:

Nothing in section 804 of this title (other than subsection (c)) shall apply to--

    (1) any single-family house sold or rented by an owner: Provided, That such private individual owner does not own more than three such single-family houses at any one time
(2)rooms or units in dwellings containing living quarters occupied or intended to be occupied by no more than four families living independently of each other, if the owner actually maintains and occupies one of such living quarters as his residence.

    However subsection (c):
    (c) To make, print, or publish, or cause to be made, printed, or published any notice, statement, or advertisement, with respect to the sale or rental of a dwelling that indicates any preference, limitation, or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin, or an intention to make any such preference, limitation, or discrimination.

He is within his rights to deny renting it to anyone other than women but it looks that advertising it as "women only" is illegal.

Yeah, could go either way. He may want to have female roommates with the idea that he only rents to hotties, and then hooks up with them in a power situation.

Or he may prefer to have roommates who don't try to hang with him. Thinks that having female roommates will give him more privacy, as they like "different things" and won't try to use his stuff (which is guy-oriented).

Unless he was giving off creepy vibes, though, he's probably closer to the latter than the former.

I wouldn't read too much into it. I've got many friends who have vowed never to live with a particular sex ever again based on bad experiences they've had in the past. Maybe he used to live with guys who were pigs and trashed the place. Maybe he is allergic to guy sweat. Who knows? Until you find out his reasons for it I would take it at face value rather than assume some kind of ulterior motive

This. I've lived in share houses with a mix of guys & girls, and also with just guys. Given the choice, i'd prefer female housemates every single time. Thats just been my experience, though.
