The Saw Thread - 5th Installment on Friday!

edited October 2008 in Debate and/or Discourse
So I love the Saw series to death (no pun intended) and am really pumped about the Saw V coming out this Friday. Let's use this thread to talk about our good friend John Kramer and his misguided adventures in Anywhere, USA.

If you hate the Saw series, that's cool, but don't be hatin' in here. Use the spoiler tag as necessary and post away!

I for one think:
Dr. Gordon will be back. The tagline for the movie is, "You won't believe the ending" so I'm thinking in the most shocking terms possible. Or Jigsaw has a twin brother, which would be lame.

I'm hoping this has a midnight release but I'm very doubtful. Need to find out.

    Re: the OP's spoiler
I don't see Cary Elwes in the cast credits. I really hope they'd try to bring him back for the 6th (which they said would be the final one last I heard)

Yeah, my thoughts as well. That being said it would be a major spoiler so I wonder if the studio has any ability to suppress that information. Otherwise yeah, you could easily find that out and ruin a surprise.

If they are really worried about the movie they will deliver it a few hours before the first showing. Matrix reloaded was delivered to the theatre I worked at about 4 hours before the first showing, which was in the evening.

Yeah, that was me. It really isn't all that bad to put together. Takes a little while. My theater however was one where we took out the really bad looking factory splices and replaced our own splices so they wouldn't show up in the movie. That added a bunch of extra work time.

    Probably took a good 1 1/2 - 2 hrs.

I'm looking forward to this, I'm one of the few people I know who actually enjoy these for the plot. One of my friends doesn't understand how I can watch it (he's not a huge fan of the torture thing, but he hasn't even seen them so I disregard his opinion). But while those situations are quite well done and have me shifting uncomfortably in my seat, I do think the story is really articulate and well-thought out.

At the end of Saw IV, when
you find out III and IV took place at the same time
    ,
I flipped out. And really, how can you top the ending of the first one? That one will always be the best in my opinion. 4 is close. I need to do a marathon before V, catch up and piece if all together then go in with a full understanding.

I've seen the first two Saw movies and thought that they were actually pretty good. I don't know why I haven't gotten around to seeing the others. I need to do that.

Saw doesn't qualify as part of the torture porn genre that seems to be masquerading itself as horror (I'm looking at you, Hostel). The Saw movies are a lot more creative and actually use the violence for a psychological effect that goes beyond pure shock value. It's a rare movie that makes you cringe at the violence and grin at the creative genius of the traps at the same time.

Sorry DUE, I don't know where you get your info, but the 6th movie is supposed to be the last and I'd be surprised if I missed some bit of SAW news.

I think it will be the best one since #2.

(Saw 3 was weak because Angus Macfayden is a terrible actor, and Saw 4's plot was kinda weak, especially with what they did with Detective Matthews.)

And I have a guess as to the shocking end:

    Speculation - Possible Spoiler
Tapp is alive and working with Jigsaw. Dude seemed crazy enough.

Just got back from the midnight showing. I thought it was good. I wish more of you here would have seen it so I can discuss certain things.

    Like...
-What was in the box Jigsaw left to his wife? (we are thinking the evidence against the bad cop)
-Why didn't they show a lot of footage of that girl getting her hand fucked up, but showed the guy screaming the whole time? (I think she is in on this)
-What does the old cop guy have to do with this?
-Where do they go from here after that ending? (which I thought was neato...I thought he was going to escape at the last second, or get half his body squished) I guess the older cop finds the bad cop in that glass thing and lets him out since they think the good cop is the jigsaw wannabe.

Well, so far it isn't looking good for SAW V critically.

I believe that most of these folks are biased though and 2 reviews were up 1 - 2 days before the movie was even released, even though the films weren't screened for critics, the reviews had no kind of actual criticism for the movie itself but for the series as a whole.

Some critics preempitively rated it as bad. =/

Anyway, it's currently at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes after 8 negative reviews to 0 positive.

    Compare that to:

    Saw - 46%
    Saw II - 36%
    Saw III - 26%
    Saw IV - 18%

So, if it continues the trend, expect it to win about 6% to 8% of critics over.

I still like to hope that it will do better critically, but it's doubtful.

    - There actually was a lot of footage of the girl's hand getting fucked up, but the prosthetic looked very similar to the guy's prosthetic. They both looked kinda manly. Watch it again and you can see that it is showing two different hands... or are you talking after they pull them out of the machine?

I swear when they were doing that buzz saw scene that we got about 95% video of the guy screaming/hand getting fucked up and then there was the first time they put the hands in that you see the blood squirt from the girl's box and then later you see a view from what seemed like behind her and blood coming from the box. I dunno, that is what I got from it, which made me believe she is a part of this since she was still talking after the incident. I mean, the guy passed out/died like right away and she was just sitting there.

Shouldn't you know what is going to happen since you worked on the movie? :P

You would think so wouldn't you? Short answer is I work on a lot of movies, and the plot was pretty complex with this one and its been a while since i read the script (I didnt bother watching the full cut just yet )

as for the scene you were referring to
I worked extensively on that scene, and trust me, there are a lot of shots of the girl getting the saw. She was not supposed to get it less.... Like, I know that one of the shots is of the girl's hand, and the saw is like almost to her wrist. I think the confusing thing is at the end where they fall to the ground you see the guy's hand pretty clearly and the cut is like way down his arm. I think that it would be too much of a twist in the last one to have that girl involved... but who knows.

EDIT: I also think that we see more of the dude because of the 1080 degree rule... Though im not entirely sure if they broke it... I know darren did that a lot but david hackel is a different director.

Well, I just got back from the movie. Got pulled over on my way home for a busted headlight - scared the piss out of me since I was still thinking about the movie.

    My thoughts:
    - Clearly the "sum is greater than the parts" because my initial reaction is that Saw 5 does not stand along as being very good. That being said, I KNOW there is seeding going on into the final film, so I'm sure when you watch 4, 5 and 6 in succession everything will tie together and will make sense.

    - I had an "ah, that's interesting!" reaction to the ending, but you could see from a mile away that Hoffman was setting up Strahm. They were really building the ending I thought, and that didn't shock me as much as some of the other endings.

    - Hoffman plays games that you can't win (ie. the detective that got her chest ripped out). If Strahm got in that coffin, isn't it safe to assume that Hoffman would have killed him anyway?

    My question:
The warehouse fire - is he referring to the location where Saw II took place?

Not my understanding. When they find the gal at the beginning of Saw 4, they didn't think either Jigsaw or Amanda had the physical capacity to lift someone like that. Therefore they were speculating that there was a 3rd accomplice, Hoffman.

My Answers to some of the questions:
The Box: It's clear that the box holds evidence of Hoffman being behind the Jigsaw Imitation Murder. In the flashback to Jigsaw talking to Hoffman he mentions that if he were to ever leave the world, the evidence that could end his life would be in a safe place.

Girl: I think she just didn't get too carried away with sticking her hand in there. The guy on the other hand went all out as we can see much later as half of his arm is in two, which probably led to him dying of shock and a lack of blood.

Old Guy: Hoffman lured the head fbi officer to where his base of operations was to frame Stahm. That was his main purpose of being there.

Where to go from Here: Jennifer is still alive and kicking and has the evidence of Hoffman's murder. If Hoffman originally planned to escape from the ice coffin, he would have to deal with her, and who knows what happens when two lunatics collide.

Granted I've never seen a single Saw movie in my life besides this one, but I think I understood it well enough.
