I like playing games with friends. (Obviously.) One friend in particular is getting back into online gaming and really enjoys 1v1 FPSes; this is my roommate from college, where we spent hours playing Quake 2 and the original Unreal Tournament together. On 360 we end up playing CoD4 matches on Shipment a lot, but playing CoD4 only 1v1 is ... unoptimized, for lack of a better word. He's expressed interest in UTIII, and since it's cheaper now I was considering buying two copies for us solely to play.
First off, is UTIII any good? I see absolutely no mention of it anywhere. I'm assuming it's not the best game available, but for reference, he and I bought Quake 4 at $10 just so we could play online together. We don't really care if the game is kind of janky so long as it's enjoyable and twitchy.
Second, what other games do you all recommend for 1v1 gaming? He and I both have a 360, Wii and DS, and I'm thinking specifically online. What we've already played:
360:
- CoD4
- Quake 4
- Burnout Revenge
- Gears (this is terrible for 1v1)
Well Halo 3 has good 1v1 and has a lonewolves matchmaking system that pits players against each other 1v1 in terms of skill. Unreal tournament 3 is pretty good, I own it for PC but a lot of it for me is the mods and extra maps.
Armored core for answer would be pretty cool to, and you get to customise your AC (Robots) a lot...I mean a lot, a lot
in my opinion there is no better 1v1 fps than quake 3 (of course some will disagree, it's a love it or hate it thing); and there are several mods that optimize even further for 1v1. and if that browser version ever finds its way out, you may not even need to buy anything

If you had a PS3 I would wholeheartadly approve of UT III. It's fantastic on that platform. But since you don't you're out of luck of enjoying my wisdom.
How about Unreal Championship 2 for Oxbox, now 360 compatible. They should be cheap as hell (Just checked the online store says is $5!) That, my friend is a steal! Right now there is a sale at gamestop get 3 used games, cheapest one is free.
I think UC2 is awesome and overlooked, it should have come out for the 360, it would have benefitted from the 360 version of LIVE.

Brawl is great 1v1, as is Mario Kart. Super Street Fighter and Capcom vs SNK is great as well.

just for the record, its not that UTIII is a bad game, its just most people hate it because it isn't changed at all from UT2k4 to it. It's the same game except prettier.

Is this playable over Live on 360s, or no? I've never tried the online portions of Oxbox games.

We played the shit out of Q3A, and 95 percent of that time was in The Longest Yard. Hell, all we really want is Quake 2 online, and the bonus disc that comes with Q4 has a really nice version of the game, but AFAIK it's not playable online. This bummed us greatly.
not to totally ignore what you asked for, but since it's you and a buddy have to considered some fighting or co-op games?
gears has great co-op, as does halo 3 and other popular titles.
similarly, i can't reccomend games like soul calibur 4 or maybe virtua fighter 5 enough. fighting games can get really intense and down-to-the-wire, in a way i don't think FPS's can quite replicate.
Unreal Tournament 3 is really good, I love the shit out of it on the 360 and PC. The 360 has split-screen though and you can go online like that (much like with Halo 3) so that is obviously in it's favor, but the PC version has (depending on your rig) better graphics, higher resolutions, and of course the amazing mods and maps the community comes up with.

Please do—alternative suggestions are welcome. I think he's partial to FPSes but I'd like to branch out beyond that. I persuaded him to go with Gears for co-op but he doesn't take to the stop-and-pop nature of the game. Halo is the obvious choice, and I'd kind of forgotten about it but that's another good option.
I don't know if he'd have the patience to learn a new fighter; we played a shit-ton of Tekken Tag in college, and I know Tekken 6 is coming to 360 eventually. Soul Calibur is actually a good idea; I might ask him about that.

I dont know if u can play online. I would ASSUME you can, but I haven't. Anyone here want to give it a go tonight? I'll be available between 6pm - 7pm EST.

Which always makes me wonder why people say "get 2k4 over 3"
3 is definitely nothing but improvements over 2k4. The problem is that they didn't change much.
Why get the uglier version with less cool vehicles?

There's a Domination addon for UT3, it costs zero dollars and comes with a bunch of maps, as well as a Vehicle Domination map.
and it will let you play your shitty Double Domination or the far superior UT99-style Domination, at your option.
Unreal Tournament 3 is basically UT2004 with better graphics and a few changes (many of the weapons feel more like UT99, the assault rifle is gone and the Enforcer is back, etc). I wouldn't have wanted to pay $50 for it at launch, but for $20 after a few patches and a bunch of online maps, it's pretty damn good.
UT3 is amazing, and it looks damn good. I basicly see it as the same thing people argue about over Counter Strike. I don't play it much but all I ever hear is that CS 1.6213216541 is soooooo much better than CS: Source. I must not be good enough to know why one is better than the other, I just think source looks better and is more fun to play, even though the mechanics on them feels exactly the same.

quake4 for 360 sucks big time. Do you guys have decent PCs? Quake4 PC version with latest patch + competition mod is pretty good. Quake3 is also a really good choice. Both of those games (especially Quake3 obviously) can scale down pretty well. Very good 1v1 DM gameplay. Also Quake Live when it comes out (or get invited to the beta).
However, since you guys like quake2 and UT, you might not like Quake3 (or quake4). Or hell, just set up a Quake2 lithium server for yourselves to play on.
UC2 gets my vote. Such an amazingly fun game - I'm really upset it didn't sell well or get much recognition. I'd LOVE to see a UE3-powered UC3

No PCs, so that eliminates Rocket Arena (Quake/UT mod)
Halo is good for one on ones...
Co-op could be a fun alternative. Splinter Cell: CT is good, but the net code is a bit laggy with the 360's emulation. System link or split screen is awesome though.
Rainbow Six Vegas 2 can be fun for awhile either for T-hunting or regular mission play.
Ace Combat is a blast even though there's only a few co-op missions.
If you want something other then jet fighters, Crimson Skies is another option for one on one dogfights.
If you like card games (like Magic: The Gathering) Phantom Dust is Fuckawesome.

We don't have PCs, or PC rigs capable of actual gaming.

No Onslaught mode?
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
