Lines?

Really difficult to describe without a picture. Lets call them lines.

I get them in whatever game I'm playing, from portal to age of empires, they'll appear randomly.

Usually it's worse and there'll be a lot more than that. But whether the lines are there or not, games always run smoothly.

Any ideas why I get lines? I use a Radeon X1900 and have the most up to date drivers. Thanks.

I had that happen to me about a month ago. Had to replace the video card. Talk to the card's maker if it's still under warranty.

I found that tilting it doesn't work very well, and once I started jerking it, I got much better results.

I believe that's what we call artifacting. Probably a heat issue?

Yeah I thought that, but apart from cleaning out the graphics card of dust, anything else I can do?

Pretty sure warranty has expired. I'm not completely against buying a new graphics card, I've had this one a while. But I wouldn't be sure which one to get, or how to install drivers on mac osx (I use windows through bootcamp).

Thanks for the responses. I'll look into artifacting...

I think it's a driver issue. With artifacting, you usually get white dots on all the edges and it looks kind of snowy.

I did a lot of research when I had graphics card issues for a while and it turned out my chipset gave my graphics card a lot of conflicts when hyperthreading was on. Just weird ass conflicts, I would do some research and see if you have some weird hardware conflicts...

but if you're looking for an excuse to buy a new graphics card you can quote me on this:

Your graphics card is completely fucked and your only option is to buy a new one that is better and faster.

You can also remount the heatsink, and use a decent thermal paste too. Also, when cleaning for dust make sure you take the cover off (should screw off) and really thoroughly clean it out.

I have an x1950pro, and I get IDENTICAL issues in all games when my card temps go above 50c. Download atitraytools and turn on the temp monitor in the "overclocking" section of the menu. I had to install a newer heatsink and I now game with the side panel off, and a 120mm fan blowing directly onto a Arctic Cooling Accelero heatsink. This is a temporary fix, I need either an new case, or a new videocard. The more the thing shows artifacts like that, the more its been run too hot, which means less life. As soon as I can afford it, I will be replacing the card and the case cause really, x1900 series aren't very good (as in, almost entirely incompatible with vista, while all my other newer systems run fine)

I'm pretty sure that may warrant a new graphics card.

I heard somewhere that "line" is actually an open polygon going out into infinity. But maybe I'm wrong (probably).

I used to get that when I had bad drivers. Happened a lot in WoW.

In all honesty though, that's really interesting. I never saw that happen before. I think a lot of "pro"/diehard competitive players would go crazy for something like that in CS 1.6/Source because they can quick scope with the awp more easily.
