PS3/360 signs me out automatically! Computer fine though.
Ok so I'm playing games with my buddies on the PS3 or 360 and all of a sudden BAM it just signs me out automatically, it happens every 15-20 minutes, meanwhile if my parents are doing some very light surfing (checking emails and such) so it shouldn't hurt my bandwith or something. And when I get logged out my parents' computer are connected no problem (my computer too).
Some common problems that happen with my connection (just for reference):
- When the intercom from security rings from downstairs (I live in a condo, it's pretty old in condo terms it's like 15 years old) when someone wants to come in or has a package for me the internet (all over the house) will kill itself for a few seconds (cutting everything off).
- PC games online are perfectly fine, in fact my brother and I can play two different PC games at the same time online (even host at the same time) and still not have problems, it's just the 360 and PS3 giving me trouble.
So is it my ISP doing this? Systematically killing my consoles because it thinks it's some weird torrent thing or whatever? I heard this stuff happen to a few people way back (ISPs killing off connections because it thinks it's a bad thing) but those time people couldn't even get online, I can but I just can't stay on for more than 20 minutes.
I would just call my ISP in your position. They're best suited to fix the problem as they can actually see whats going on with your service.
(I'm assuming you've got DSL as i've never heard of cable internet dying from an intercom)
I dont know how widespread it is, but at my old house there was "Fast" dsl, and "Interweaved" dsl or some such bullshit. the latter provides a more error-free connection, but shuttles the data instead of sending it along as it's recieved, from what i remember reading. With fighting games online, the interweaved connection was the fucking bane of my existance.
I called them up and had them switch it back over to "fast", but had to agree to less bandwidth (i went from like 7mb to like 6). maybe one connection or the other is fucking without your systems, maybe there are simply too many errors on the line for the connection to be reliable, maybe you have cable and this is completely unhelpful. Either way, call them, and tell them that you cant seem to maintain a connection. Don't mention your ps3/xbox or they'll just try to get rid of you by having you call their respective companies, which is useless. They should be able to check your connection for errors (the type that are so minimal that they're enough to lose data that keeps you signed in, but not drop the connection altogether) and hopefully work with you from there towards fixing the problem.
I was actually an entry-level tech for my local DSL ISP and one of the questions they should be asking you just so happens to be about the buzzer system. It's quite likely that the simple fact that the buzzer being tied into the internet is creating too much 'noise' on the line for the connection to be reliable enough to use on gaming systems, but is adequate for browsing. Bumping you down to a lower bandwidth would lessen the strain on the connection, even if the noise from the buzzer is still there. otherwise your landlord would have to install a special filter on the entire system, and the odds of that happening are laughable.
I'm not 100%, so YMMV.
ApexMirage on
I'd love to be the one disappoint you when I don't fall down
it could be ip conflicts. i had problems with this in the past, but after spending some time making sure every system in the network had a unique static ip, it worked fine. i do know that (if you don't use it) by switching media server functionality off for the ps3 it can help with network dropouts.
