Guide to installing AQ2 - Note: Next link is an installer, but I'm leaving this in case somebody has problems. Most links are non-working, but almost all files can be found through googling.

3.20 Quake, and thus AQ2, should work in Vista.

Guide made redundant by installer!

Lights, Camera, WIKIPEDIA:
Action Quake 2 (aka AQ2, Action, Action Quake) was a popular mod for the computer game Quake II.[1] Although it was originally released in 1998, it still has a small player base with active servers on several continents as of 2008. AQ2 was developed to recreate the look and feel of an action movie, having a fast pace and a semi-realistic damage system. It features many maps recreating realistic settings, such as city streets and office buildings, with a balanced range of weapons and equipment inspired by action movies. This action movie concept is emphasized by the tagline "All the fun and speed of your favorite action movie, without the cost of a ticket!!". [1]
First released in 1998 by The A-Team, Action Quake 2 is the first mainstream example of a semi-realistic tactical shooter, in that there are compromises between what could happen in the real world and what allows for fun gameplay. For example, in AQ2 a shot to the leg with any weapon will cause initial damage, reduced movement speed and jumping ability, and bleeding damage (where the player will lose roughly a hit point each second). The player can bandage himself in six seconds to completely stop the bleeding damage and restore full mobility.
Other projects made by the same development team include Action Half-Life (AHL), Action Unreal Tournament (AUT) (project abandoned) and Action Unreal Tournament 2004 (AUT2K4).
There was an attempt to make an Action Quake 3 built around the Quake 3 game engine, which had not achieved the popularity of its predecessor. It is developed by community members, and titled Reaction Quake 3. It is not an official Action mod, but the Reaction team was granted permission by the Akimbo Team to create Reaction.

Anybody remember this?

I recently got a decent laptop and I was pondering getting a few LAN games going with my friends. So I started thinking back on the greatest times I've had playing with other people and I honestly don't think I had more fun with any other game. It was fast, furious and fantasticly fun.

While remnants of the gameplay may have survived in such mods as Counterstrike, I don't think the feel was ever truly captured in any other iteration than AQ2, although plenty of efforts were made (Action Halflife, anyone? Pff)

I even remember booting up the game not that long ago and still finding full servers, which I find incredible, considering that it is a Quake 2 mod. Quake 2, for christ's sake. Anyway, I digress, so:

Does anybody remember this at all? It was huge for a while, but I do remember all sorts of trouble setting it up even on XP, so I'm reluctant to even get my hopes up for it working in Vista. But I'm so gonna try.

Discuss. Reminisce.

oh man..... ooooooooooooooooooooh man. I played this nightly during college. I loved this mod. I remember the multitude of different maps that were out. Ahh to many good flashback hitting me at once to sort through. Strafe jumping + sawed off shotgun ftw!

Get Dirty Action Quake 2 if your up for some Matrix + John Woo action. It took Action Quake 2 and added lots of wall jumping, and akimbo anything. My brother and I played it all the time through out high school. Great times.

This was probably my number one played game of all time. I think I played this on a regular basis for 3 or 4 years, through both high school and college.

I even made a crappy map that I found on some small server rotations called "warehouse"

I was working at an ISP when this was the hot thing in the gaming world, and we had our own server running.

Much abuse was given out with our 5ms ping, when everyone else had 200+ pings.

Had countless knife-only battles too. Knife fights were hilarious.

Oh, yes! Knife-only was great, not least of all because you had the knife-throw instakill ability. And the sound that knife made when it hit flesh! Instant gratification!

    Edit: And face-kicking!

Anyone try getting it running on Vista?

I've never played any of the Action * FPS games.

So whats the gimmick that makes them "action"?

hahaha, kickass... I found my shitty old map

Also, what was the map that had a pool with diving board to the side, then 2 high rises with elevator shafts that shot you up to the top with air? knife/kick battles on top of those were amazing... sending people plummeting 20 stories to their death.

as far as i know AQ2 was the first popular mod to use "realistic" weapons as opposed to rocket launchers and such. But the pacing and everything stayed quake speeds with guns / damage being realistic. So like an action movie is how things played out. The maps and what not of course were also typically "real world" settings instead of space stations or whatever. All this before counterstrike existed (before half life even)

You could only take one or two hits before dying, if you got shot you'd bleed (and take periodic damage) until you stopped and bandaged up. Had your typical array of weapons which you'd select prior to spawning. There was a shotgun, an assault rifle, and pistols. Pistols could be dual wielded. Plus the knives.. you'd spawn with 5 knives, and when thrown they'd stick in walls which would allow anyone to pick them back up and re-use.

When it was new, it was pretty unique play. Not so much anymore. ;)

Yes, actually AQ2 players were Counterstrike beta testers. If you ever hung out at the fear.net forums, a few of the CS guys were from the AQ2 dev team I believe and would have people there test out early versions of CS. A lot of people thought the whole hostage idea was stupid initially and hated having to buy guns.

well, to be honest i was into AQ2 way more than CS. Never really locked on to CS that much for whatever reason. Nothing could match flying through the map at 100mph, turning a corner and sawed off shotgunning a dude across the map with a satisfying BOOM.

    man I miss this game.

Yeah, me and my LPB buddies would "snipe" with the pistols. It was unbeatable when people were stuck playing on a modem.. and we had a OC-48 backing us up.

I'd forgotten about the handcannon. God that thing produced some awesome kills.

They were at least instantly recognizable.. Remember that one with the tram going across the canyon? Man, that was terrible. In fact, most of the desert ones were designed pretty horribly.

Okay, this is FANTASTIC! I used the installer and my game was up and working in like five minutes, so I just press "game" and start to familiarize myself with the controls and everything and in literally two minutes, three players joined and just like that a deathmatch is going on full speed.

I'm honestly flabbergasted. I thought this would be a hassle. A hassle with no players, at that. But it works flawlessly under Vista and with minimal effort. I just need to do my bindings and that's it. Now to get some Team Deathmatch going. Preferably with the cops/robbers skin.

Yeah, the Opera was pretty much a remake of the AQ2 idea. AQ2 was popular and it attracted a whole lot of modder attention. Only thing that really put the game under was CS, and by the time (re)AQ3 was playable there wasn't enough interest to keep it going.

Production quality was much higher.. for one, it was Quake 3, which is a fabulous looking engine. They also brought in some better mappers and modelers so the whole thing felt a lot more polished.

But the "realistic deathmatch" market was getting pretty crowded so it just never made much of a fanbase. Dilution was starting to be a serious problem, I think it's why we see so few successful mods these days (success defined as the gangbusters popularity of AQ2 and CS).

I really couldn't say.. I don't remember playing reAQ3 at all, so I assume it was completely average because it didn't leave any impression at all. I guess that means it doesn't suck either, since I tend to remember that stuff. ;)

There was a swat style "cops n robbers" mod that came out for Q3 at one point, though I can't remember what it was called. It was vaguely styled after AQ2, in the sense it basically played the same, but didn't have any of the entertaining charm of it. It sure looked good though.. which I could remember what it was called.

I was debating whether to make a new post for this or not... but...

I discovered my Q3 server has a auto-install feature for a few mods.

    One being UrbanTerror4.

Specifically, a version that's a stand-alone application, and doesn't require you to own Q3, and it works on OS X, Windows, and Linux. (Download link here.)

You can probably guess what I did.
