Filing for Unemployment?

I just need to know if there are any unadvertised risks for filing for unemployment. I lost my job about 2 months ago and have been searching ever since. I'm not currently in a place where I pay rent (living with bf's parents) but I obviously want to move out on my own again (just moved here about a month ago) asap.

Also, my last job was in another state. Anything I need to know? I have a few bills to pay that will likely be due before I find a job. And trust me, I've been looking. Every day.

I guess another part of my question is, should I file in my current state? I became unemployed in Texas. Is it possible to file there?

The company can try and deny you unemployment, so don't be surprised if you have to go to a hearing

You definitely need to get online to your state's website and check out their unemployment requirements.

You will have to check your eligability. I would start with your the dept. in you home state first, and they will be able to tell you if you can file there, or the previous state.

FYI, if you apply and they deny your claim for any reason, be sure and appeal. I had a buddy who got fired for having too many absences. Totally legit, write ups, probation, the whole thing was documented and he just kept appealing until they gave it to him, so don't be afraid to appeal.

I should be eligible. I was laid off because the job i held was at my university and it was designated for students. I graduated in May, so when the new semester started they had to let me go. According to everything I've read I am eligible.

I talked to someone in Texas about an hour ago, and she told me to try contacting someone in my state (AR). I called, but they were out of the office for the day, so I'll try Monday.

I just wanted to know if it affects your credit or something. I don't know why it would but you never know.

It doesn't affect your credit. You pay taxes into the system in order to realize such benefits, so don't feel bad about getting some of your money back. I've had to go on unemployment twice in the past year (though the second time was only for about a week and a half.)

Just don't expect to get much out of it. I got about 60% of my pay in benefits. It certainly helps, though.
