New Show: Dexter

I read about this show in Entertainment Weekly, and I have to say it's one of the most interesting premises I've heard in a long time. A serial killer who only kills people who "deserve" it, like other murderers and rapists. It's on Showtime, and unfortunently I don't get that channel. Does anybody watch it and if you do does it live up to it's premise?

wow thanks for that kusu.
I thought it looked pretty interesting, whether entirely original or not... unfortunately I've had a lot of shows to catch up on so I didnt start it yet, and no my computer is in rough shape for probably a few days./
I'd be curious what anyone around here thought as well, but it definitely looks like it could be great to me.
Semi-hijack for another Showtime show. Rent-A-Goalie, anybody else watching it and loving it? I'm not sure if its because of the italian-family owned business reminds me of my own family, or the Canadian feel, I just do not know. But I love it.
This must be based on the books (Dearly Devoted Dexter and Darkly Dreaming Dexter) by Jeff Lindsay. I've never read them, but coworkers of mine have, and it sounds like the same thing.

My wife has me downloading it, so she can watch it, which actually says something, since she knows a lot about serial killers, and generally cannot stand how they're portrayed in pop culture. Personally, I'm a little bored by it though.

I've seen only one episode, and I was kinda bored by it.
Dexter himself is the gay brother from Six Feet Under, and I just can't get that out of my mind. GO figure. I mean I watched that series for what, 5, 6 years?

GF records it every week. It's a pretty decent show. It stars the creepy gay brother from Six Feet Under. My only real gripe is that the actress who plays hios cop sister is just terrible.
The books were all right if you could get over the fact that the end of the day they were just your run of the mill who-dunit stories.
The show is all right, I always thought the source material would work better as a visual medium.
I like it. Dexter's a really interesting character. The rest of the cast needs to catch up to the quality of the main guy's work though. It's worth checking out if you have Showtime and like crime shows.

I can never think the sister is bad.
She was in this really bad horror movie playing a cazy chick that pretended to have a twin sister and killed people.
Compared to that, she deserves an fricken Emmy for this show.
This is a really solid show and I'm greatly enjoying it. I'm tempted to purchase the books.
Dexter as a character is really, really interesting. Not entirely unsympathetic, definitely not normal and yet in so many ways he really is a hero. He's fantastic with children, protects his girlfriend, rewards the good and delivers justice to the bad. He just does the latter in a deliciously creepy cold-blooded way.
I think the sister is great. She's goofy and her speech is nerve-ridden which I consider traits of the character rather than bad acting on the actress's part. I think all the performances are great. The cinematography's pretty awesome at times, too.

My girlfriend always complains about the opening sequence, since he shaves, but in later shots is shown to be unshaven. It bugs her a lot.
The actress who plays the sister reminds me of Rebecca Pidgeon. I never really did figure out whether she was deliberately giving a quirky offputting performance, or whether she just sucks as an actress. I think I'll settle on the latter, though.
Then I'll just disagree with you. Boo! I want to hug the sister. I think she's in great contrast to Dexter, who is cool and calm and so very logical. He protects her.
I think the character of Debbie is a hard one to portray. I've never read the book, but I'm assuming that she and Dexter had significant problems before going to live with Harry. I don't think I've seen any shows where the mentally ill overcome their problems and become productive members of society.
I love this show so much. I like how there is the overall Ice Truck Killer storyline going on with a weekly "kill this week's serial killer" story, on top of all the character development they shove in there. The asian guy who plays the other tech guy cracks me up, though I haven't seen him in the previous 2 episodes. The flashbacks are kinda shmaltzy and simple though.
The little character development parts for each character is where the show shines, getting a glimpse of the supporting character's lives, like [spoiler:06a40fc1d9]Angel worrying about an anniversary present, then finding out he's going through a rough time in his marriage, and he gives the gift to his daughter. Or the one cop being used as bait to catch a drug lord.[/spoiler:06a40fc1d9]
Also, Rita, Dexter's girlfriend, nailed the part of a damaged, vulnerable woman trying to put her life back together. The previews they showed for the later episodes have me excited for what isto come.
Who is Angel? I totally missed that little bit of character development. Unless it's in episode 4? I've only seen 3 so far.
He's the latino cop who's friends with Dexter. He has his own little mini-storyline in episode 4 that was funny and sad at the same time.
The ending to episode 4 was awesome, definitely watch the episode if you get a chance. It even redeems the lady who plays bitchy head cop by a little bit.

I got my housemate and her boyfriend into Dexter, (as well as my ex) so I usually wait until they're free so we can all watch it together

It says "OX"?
"Its a clover"
Haha, those parts made me chuckle. I love how dense Dexter can be when it comes to human interaction sometimes.
t Janson - yeah, I force my roommate to watch it with me, though thank god we have tivo, or I would never catch it. Its great to watch it with someone else, the creepy parts don't seem so creepy.
Also, for US viewers, Showtime is running a marathon of all Dexter episodes saturday night, i think. So its a good time to catch up.
This show is fucking amazing. Definitely the best non sci-fi show I've seen for ages. The writing is excellent, it doesn't pull any punches at all, even the cinematography is great. Every episode so far has been pretty much perfect - if the quality keeps up like this I definitely expect it to become one of my favorite shows ever.

b) Dexter's split personality. [/spoiler:4b46a1b915]
Also, the guy who plays Angel is awful.
[spoiler:4b46a1b915]Lara Croft BJ for Dex, FTW, though. [/spoiler:4b46a1b915] :winky:

Just got rid of Showtime, but I've seen the first few episodes. I'll have to torrent the rest until the DVDs come out.
