Buying an MP3 player for a friend.

I want to buy a friend of mine a small Mp3 player for her birthday, and preload it with some playlists I've made for her (I've been preparing some mix cds for her, but then I realised that an mp3 player with the mixes on it would be even better...)

The most important thing for me is that I would like her to be able to load music onto it without having to wipe the music I put on it. Are there mp3 players that do this? I've only ever used an ipod, and I don't really know what is out there.

The other considerations are:

- She doesn't use the net much, and has no video collection to speak of, so if I can get one that doesn't have a video component that would be preferable.

- 2-4gigs should be perfectly adequate. She doesn't even have her own computer, so she has a very small collection of music.

- I want it to have a track display of some sort (ruling out the ipod shuffle).

- Price is obviously a factor, but not a major one. I don't want to get something shitty just because it's cheap. I'm looking at spending about $100AU ($70 something US?), but that's fairly flexible.

You should be able to get a cheap 2-4 gb Creative Zen quite cheaply. They have a decent display and are easy to work with in terms of getting music on/off them.

EDIT: In that price range you'll probably be looking for a Zen V (or Zen V plus), possibly a 2gb but probably a 4gb.

They have a line called Stone as well which is in that price range, but I think they're shuffle-esque and lack a display.

EDIT the Second: If you can get a V plus at a good price, consider that. The difference between that and a basic V is video and radio capabilities. Your friend might not need/want video, but radio could possibly be nice.

There's a model called Mosaic that I'm not familiar with, but I think it also falls into your price range and it's newer than the V's. I don't think it does anything you really need, though.

    Aside:

Wow, that's a funky little mp3 player. I haven't looked at Creative's Zen in a couple year. That Mosiac looks pretty interesting.

There's also a version of the Zen Stone (called the Zen Stone Plus) that has a screen.

If you get the Mosaic video player I would suggest 4GB if she is going to put videos on it.

Also, another consideration: do the Creative players use some kind of software to transfer songs? I know players by Sansa just use Windows and you can drag-and-drop right to the player. Not sure which would be easier, but if the Creative players use proprietary software and it sucks (I had a Sony MP3 player and the software blew) that could be something to take into account.

the zen touch i had for the past 3 years (replaced it with a zune 120) had software to make lists and add songs (and the software wasnt too great) but it also let you just drag and drop songs into a folder marked music on the drive.

in that respect my friend has a sandisk mp3 player who says it is essentially a very portable external HDD that can play music or video files if drag and drop is what you are looking for.

I'd look to get her a Sansa Fuze. Yes, it does play video, but it's not like because there's an option for video in the main menu that she'll instantly have no clue how to use it for music.

Just saw this in my email. This Sansa right here is regarded rather well, and Tiger Direct has it for 45 bucks.

I can also vouch for the Zen Stone plus. Not fancy, but it's small and it gets the job done.

Sansa Fuze is made by Sandisk, I think? So the last two posts are talking about the same thing, likely. It should be possible to get a 4gb in your price range, though maybe not if electronics are much more expensive in Australia than in the US.

People seem to be happy with them in general.

I've found the transfer software to be very simple on Creative's ones, practically drag and drop, but the Sandisc model is obviously as good as it gets.

They are not the same thing. the player you linked to is the Sansa "e" series, the 4GB one was the e260 if I remember right. The Fuze is a player similar to the 3rd gen nano. It runs smilar firmware but the control pad is much improved over the e series.

If I didnt' have an iPod touch I'd probably get a Fuze.

I wasn't referring to Monolith's post, he posted while I was slowly typing mine I think. I don't know anything about the older ones, but I've heard good things about the Fuze 'series'.

I think they might be slightly more expensive than Creative's equivalents in Australia, so he might have to settle for a 2gb, but that should still be sufficient for his purpose.

I have an 8 gig creative zen and I like it quite a bit, the video display looks pretty nice too.

Has anyone used an iRiver? I went to the big HiFi store at my local mall, and the guy recommended an iRiver as being what I needed. I asked about creative Zens, and he said they can't sell any creative things, but I can probably get to a mall that is slightly further afield and have a look there as well.
