PS3 Blu Ray = Green Line on Right of Screen

I just got a PS3 today and discovered that when I play a blu-ray movie there is a neon green fucking line right down the right hand side of my screen. What is the deal and how do I make it go away?

I can set the overscan on my HDTV to 10% (that's the lowest amount of overscan possible on the set) which effectively pushes it off the screen, but stretches out the image, killing the quality. I might as well stick to DVDs if I'm going to murder the picture quality by doing that so... yeah.

How do I make the green line go away? Is there some setting I need to change deep within the bowels of my PS3?

This was the one you got a deal on yeah? :( damn.

Try it on another tv. If it does it still, it's probably something really wrong. Ie, you'd have to return it.

Googling reveals I'm not the only person to have this problem. PS3s seem to create a variety of green line problems on different televisions. Only solutions I can find are to turn on overscanning to "push" the line off the screen but fuck that, since doing so craps on the image quality.

I've also found that the green line only shows up on some blu ray movies. On the PS3 intro disc, it pops up on the movie trailers but not on the Blu-Ray Highlights, Game Trailers, or Sony Movies Highlights videos. Fucking weird.

To reiterate, the PS3 was brand new sealed in box. It's a 40GB model (the one that was in production till they started making 80GB models).

Have you tried changing the output resolution?

I have a similar problem, but with games. On my 52" HD-TV theres a line down the right side, and bottom. If its a dark game like Bioshock, its annoying, but GTA 4 its fine. Give ti a test on another TV, or call up Sony. Or just try swaping it for another system.

Well unfortunately it was the last 40GB model we had in stock so I can't swap it... and I don't have any other HDTVs I can try it on. I have a feeling it wouldn't show up on an SDTV because they tend to overscan a bit anyways.

Upon further digging, it appears that a number of televisions will do the green line thing on "just scan" when watching Blu-Rays. It seems likely it isn't my PS3, but rather my television... grah. I'm going to see if I can try my PS3 on my bro-in-law's HDTV to make sure. His PS3 doesn't do it, as far as I know.

While running in 10% overscan though, I've noticed that everything in the PS3's UI is placed such that none of it will go off the edge of the screen. Shit gets pretty snug to the corners but never goes past the edge. I may just resign to watching Blu-Rays in 10% overscan if it is indeed my TV that's doing it.

Still... if anyone's got any kind of solution to this, please do tell! Someone here must have had this problem!

I took my PS3 to my bro-in-law's and hooked it up to his hdtv. No green line (I checked all the overscan options on his set, too). So the PS3 itself is fine, it's just an issue with my TV. Which on one hand sucks, because there's nothing I can do about it short of buy a new tv, but on the other hand is good because it means I didn't get a bum PS3.

    Thanks for the help, dooders.
