Looking to shoot some bots

edited November 2008 in Games and Technology
So, I have a hankering for some shooting. FPS, TPS, whatever. The thing is, I'm more in the mood for a deathmatchy experience, but for a variety of reasons, online is non-viable.

So I'm left with going up against bots. I'm just not sure what games have good bots, or any bots at all, for that matter. Here's the basic requirements:

-Deathmatch, or team deathmatch, or some sort of multiplayer kill-other-dudes option.
-Bots, of course. If I can command those on my side, even better.
-Console, or has a way to play it on macs. I lack a Windows machine.

Now, I also always enjoy a good grenade launcher in my games(no idea why), and vehicles, so these are both bonuses. I don't NEED these, however.

So. Any good suggestions?

Quake Wars: Enemy Territory? It's not bad with bots.

Barring that there's always Unreal Tournament.

Damned near every Half Life mod (Day of Defeat, NS, CS, Firearms, etc) has third party bots that range from shit to pretty good. I don't know how well/if they work for Macs though, so it might take some research.

No game since created has surpassed the bots in Perfect Dark.

I'm serious. That game has the best bots in the entire history of the FPS genre.

You can order them around, and it does have a grenade launcher (several, actually!)

So much truth. We'd play games where we had the hardest bots that only did the unarmed attack. It would kill you in about 1-3 hits, and in that game melee would blur up your screen terribly. It was horrifying sitting with a friend in a bunker as they came at you.

Unreal Tournament 2004 probably has the best bots I've played against, plus like five hundred billion goddamned custom maps and mods. I know you probably already have/have heard of it but it's still my first recommendation. UT3 is also a good choice but there isn't quite as much custom content out for it yet and I don't know your PC specs so I don't know if it'd be a good choice for you.

If you still have the original Unreal Tournament, Thievery is an awesome thief inspired multiplayer game.

    The bots aren't terrible either.

I know someone already said Unreal Tournament 2004, but he didn't mention invasion, which comes with the game.

Invasion is a (sub-game-mode?) wherein you play on any map you want and survive increasingly difficult waves of monsters! It is insanely awesome and challenging. You will wind up facing dozens if not a hundred different monsters chasing you in a huge mob while you desperately jump around trying to kill them, stay safe, collect guns/ammo, and do awesome UT2K4 style acrobatic foot-work.

Plus the music is excellent and really gets you in the groove.

Damn now i want to chase down my CDs and find someone to invasion with.

Timesplitters: Future Perfect seems to fit the bill nicely. It feels to me a lot like the spiritual and literal successor to Perfect Dark as far as bots go. I was able to entertain myself nicely for at least a couple of months just trying to unlock things with just the main game and the arcade leagues full of bots.

I still have nightmares about FistSim. The tranq gun sim was similarly frightening but there's nothing quite so awful as being trapped in a corner with FistSim bearing down on you.

The actual combat AI is fine. DICE did a really lousy job of programming any kind of AI when they enter a vehicle. They pretty much go into kill mode with no regard to anything else. Still fun as far as bot matches go.

Examples: My own allies flattening me with the ramp to a landing boat. A fighter plane suddenly diving out of the sky to smash into my jeep. A grenade bounced off the hull of a tank right into my face. A shell from a friendly stationary anti armor cannon, gracefully arcing over the hill (and inches over the intended target's turret), falling down, down, down to detonate upon impact with my apc. It goes on.

Is it just me, or were the bots in 2004 more competent than the ones in UT3? I tried botmatches and singleplayer through the campaign, but apart from the absolutely crazy dialogue and attempts at a setting (FLaG FLaG LOL), my team mates seemed like the most useless bunch on the planet. Whatever difficulty I was on, they weren't smart enough to achieve anything themselves (except maybe base defence, and that won't win you the game when you've got points to capture.), and ordering them around didn't result in much either. Playing UT2004 at least I felt as if my team mates were capable of holding the fort and prioritising targets for a push, which was useful.

Maybe I just need to try it again, but I just ended up feeling a whole lot of frustration with those bots.

I think you may be right, as far as capturing flags and nodes and stuff. The UT3 bots are fine at shooting and blowing shit up but they won't help you do SHIT in warfare or ctf. You might as well be playing alone.

It was like something out of a b-grade horror movie. I was prone on the beatch sniping at some machine gunners and when I scoped out to reload I noticed a shadow growing around me. As I turned to look around I died, killed by....an ally with a landing boat? When the death cam panned out I saw my two little boots sticking out from under the lowered ramp of the boat.

Oh, I played Time Splitter 2 and Future Perfect. I absolutely loved them both, and just wish I had had an XBOX to play online. The map editor in particular was GENIUS.

Still, PD's bots were better. Customizable personalities, and the difficulty levels were absolutely top-of-the-line. Meat sims couldn't hit you from point blank, while dark sims head-shotted you the moment they saw you. Dark sims did cheat some, though- they were faster, had more life, and seemed to know where you were.
