I'm going to spoil myself tonight, and snatch up a solid DS title to occupy some of my free time. I'm just looking for an opinion here. I've played Disgaea, and I loved it. But I've also heard wonderful things about TWEWY. This will be the first time I've bought myself a (relatively) new game in a couple years.
Mainly, what kind of lasting playability does TWEWY have? Is it pretty much a one shot through game? Or will I easily whittle away a hundred hours of my life on it?
TWEWY is one of the most replayable RPG's I've ever had. I'm someone who never replays them, and I found plenty of post-game stuff to keep me occupied. I spent twice as long with the game after I beat it, and I didn't even accomplish half the extra stuff.
That being said, I have a hard-on for Disgaea. You really can't go wrong.
Disgaea just seems so perfect as a handheld title. I mean, the content is almost infinite, and the semi-puzzle gameplay of the item world is amazing.
I plan to pick up both eventually. Guess I'll start with TWEWY since it's a bit more expensive, and I haven't tried it before. I just know that ATLUS games can get to be a bit difficult to find if you wait too long.
I've actually told people that Disgaea and TWEWY are 2 of the best games on DS. I would say watch some videos online of both games in action and make the call from there. They are both so good I can't really tell you one way or the other.
Disgaea shouldn't be too hard to find, if only because it's available on 3 different platforms (PS2, PSP, and DS) and you can still find copies of each version easily at your average Gamestop.
I have The World Ends with You coming to me later this week or next, thanks to Goozex. I hope it's as good as everyone says. Oh well, even if I hate it, it seems to be holding its value pretty steadily so I should be able to sell it back for about what I paid.
I haven't played the DS version of Disgaea, but I HAVE purchased the game three times. (First time for PS2, again for PS2 because my disc was scratched, and then for PSP.) It's one of my favorite games of all time.
That being said, if you are a fan of JRPGs, you owe it to yourself to check out The World Ends With You. It's an action RPG, not a strategy RPG, but it is the best thing Square Enix has released in a long, long, time. You haven't played anything like it, and that's one of the reasons Disgaea won me over the first time I played it.
So, while neither choice would be bad, you should try something new. Break down some walls.
TWEWY, definitely. You've already played Disgaea, so TWEWY is something new. It's radically different from any other RPG you've ever played, and is a blast. The post-game content is almost more engrossing than the main game.
That being said, you really can't go wrong with either.

Is Disgaea a direct port, or watered down to fit on a DS cart?

...and when you are done with that; take a folding
chair to Creation and then suplex the Void.
Well... you might at first; but, then... later you'll be all like "HOLYFUCK! HOW DID I EVER REGRET THIS!" Then, you'll start to make extra sound effects to your stylus-fu. At least, that's my story.
Did they do anything to make the healer type characters less annoying to level up in Disgaea?
Having to go out of my way to kill people with them really got on my nerves.
Give 'em a bow until they earn about 1-3 mana.
Use that mana to make mages with the Healer as a master.
Stand the healer next to the mage(s), then use the level one magic until they learn it themselves.
Earn more mana, make a -decent- mage with the healer as the master, continue.
It's a bit annoying, but this is the best way to make them decent. For -extra- points, make the Healer with Flonne as a master, and then let -her- learn all the healing and damage magic. She's pretty awesome as a Cleric/Mage.
I love both masses, and am playing both at the moment.
But I say TWEWY, because it's so original. The gameplay is different, and the themes too. I love love love epic fantasy, but it was very refreshing to play an RPG with modern problems in it.
So, I wasted my entire day off from work on TWEWY. Definitely an amazing game. Thanks for the suggestions.
Both of my room mates want to give it a run when I've beaten it. The only thing I really hate about the DS is the fact that there's only one save file on all of the games.

Some DS games have multiple save files, but yeah, that's a valid complaint for others.
Glad you like TWEWY. More people need to experience that game.

Though in Disgea, my characters were so badass that I never had a reason to heal anyone.

I also hate having to use the stylus in games. TWEWY and Canvas Curse were amazing exceptions.

Definitely true...you'll fumble badly for a while. Then you'll get the hang of things and feel like a Jedi ninja.
