Graphics card prob.

First off, sorry for a 'HELP ME' thread. I don't like making them, but i need some speedy advice on this one and this is usualy my first port of call.

So, I just bought an 8800GT 512 (replacing an 8600 256) to help prop up my computer for a little while longer. Pop out the old card, slot in the new, plug in the 6 pin PCI-E power lead and turn the computer on.

Mobo posts fine, video card, cpu fan, everything whirs into life - mouse activates, sound drivers loaded (can hear the speakers pop a little) - and basically i can hear it getting to the windows log in screen. But, no signal. Nothing. Completely blank screen. I try the other DVI port on the card, i try unplugging the back of the monitor, turning it off, back on, taking the card out and slotting it back in and still nothing. I even tried my old 19" CRT through a DVI/VGA adapater and still nothing.

Shrugged, reinstalled my 8600 and everything works fine.

Now, can this really be as simple as a 'dead card', because i find it strange that the fan works and everything seems well. Or could it be a power/pci-e 2.0/bios problem ? Here is my spec :

Asus a8v-vm se Socket 939 mobo
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ (2.2gig)
2GB Crucuial DDR Ram
The PSU i am unsure about, i can't log in to check the order, but i got it around a year and a half ago and it was overkill at the time, so i'm sure it's at least 400-450W, possibly 500+.

Thanks.

Some people are suggesting that certain VIA chipsets aren't compatible with PCI-E 2.0 cards and that i need to flash the bios on the 8800 down to a 1.0.

Is this going to work ? I'd rather not start flashing bioses.
