This series is about some dude who dies in a car crash (along with his whole family) but then he steals the powers form some demon or something and comes back to life and starts a contest where people try to blow each other up and the winner gets a wish granted and blah blah blah.
The point is THEY ENEMIES, SHOOT THEM.
When you win you get a cutscene with a "be careful what you wish for" vibe as (generally) something horrible happens to the victor.
The series has changed developers a couple of times, and the quality has varied wildly because of it, but in any case, overall, there's some good times to be had.
Supposedly there is one in the works for the PS3 but we don't know anything about it other than it's in the works.
Oh, and did I forget to mention that the series' mascot is a psychotic clown whose head is on fire?

Well he was pretty much the best standard character. His damage was unmatched.
I was always partial to Shadow the purple hearse though.

I'll second this. Twisted Metal 1 is what convinced me to spend all my saved up allowance money on a playstation.
Twisted Metal II is by far the best in the series though. Love the cheesy cutscenes.

I think it suffered from unrealistic expectations.
I mean, the game is just... guns on cars. There isn't much more you can add to that except for better graphics... and it did have those.
My biggest problem was it was fucking impossible to figure out what was going on in that game, for me--far more so than in TM2.
But I'm certainly under-par in that respect, usually.
